All I really need to know is whether a 1980s French AWB will do what we want, and if so which ones are good and which are lemons.

Thanks for everybody who has taken time to answer the question, especially the very comprehensive private messages from people with experience of these boats.
It appears that Sea Change might have the answers in PMs, let's hope so. Then he can move forward weighing up locations and the pros and cons of the yachts for which he has details. The securement of contents and moving of the contents might be easier than feared.

Are the Morgans all so bad? I know that some models have a poor reputation but I think there are some exceptions. They definitely prioritise accommodation over performance but that might be in their favour. And there should be quite a choice in your part of the world

Morgans are bad. They are the cheapest of the cheap. They were never a quality boat and very few seem to be in great shape

I have heard this. But I’ve also heard owners talk very happily about their boats. I wonder if there is a ‘horses for courses’ factor. Maybe they are good enough for some people in some places?
Absolutely no axe to grind. But the OP needs a solution
