Just reading James Jermain's excellent radar class in Oct YM. On the plot, should the initial bearing be 157 as stated or 057?

Apologies to those who haven't yet had their copy delivered.

I suspect that you are right, and that the initial bearing should have been 057 deg. Unless, of course, own ship's heading was 100 deg, so that the bearing relative to North would be 100 + 57. But own ship's heading isn't given anywhere, so you're probably right.

Incidentally, be very wary of plotting while in head-up mode; changes in your own heading can have significant effects on your plot. That's probably why the Wahkuna collision happened.

Thanks. Presumably it would be possible, when working from a head-up radar to add to each plot a heading (read from the chartplotter) in order to allow a manual conversion to a course-up reading (or even north-up if mental faculties permit)?
