    Simple Halyard replacement

Checking my running rigging, have noticed my mainsail halyard has frayed and the outer sheath has pulled back a bit. The replace is it just a simple case of butting the new rope to the old, securing with either some tape or twine and then pulling through? Or is there something else should be...

    Conversion to Junk RIg

Following on from the articles on the web-site relating to a junk rig arrangement, has anyone gone through the conversion process? I have a kingfisher K22 and would love to convert it over to a junk rig but can't seem to find the relevant information or find people who have done it. Is it a...

Thanks for the advice. It is the halyard I am changing. Will get some whipping cord and a needle to attach the two together.

Changing running rigging on a Kingfisher 22ft

I need to change the rope halyards for the main sail lift. The rope has frayed and the outer has separated from the inner. Can I just secure the new rope to the old, but the ends and wrap in tape and then slowly pull the new through? Or should I either get the mast stepped or have someone climb...

Thanks for the responses. Generally just wanted to know if anyone had used the compass that's being sold by rnli shop. The option of using a handheld gps was that they have a compass function

Handheld Digital Compass or Handheld GPS

Wonder if anyone here has purchased a Digital compass, advertised in RNLI shop among others, and if they are any good to use as a back-up and one to use in the tender? Or would I be better off looking at a handheld GPS instead. Thoughts? Digital compass for £40 or GPS handheld from £100.

Advice for a couple of new Day Skippers

Are you looking to get your own boat and then sail when you can? Or are you just looking for a couple of weeks holiday each year? If the latter then look at bareboat charter and that way the cost is not too high. Personally I would look for a small yacht and just enjoy day sailing and weekends...

Ryde isle of wight - harbour entrance silting up

I imagine that the harbour is still accesible at a shorter time around high tide, or has the silt blocked any movements now?

    Leisure 22 v Nicholson 27 as a first boat

I think the major thing to consider and get right is whether the boat is for one or for both. From the discussions it is not clear if the partner is looking forward to sailing and being with you on it, or just going along as you are enthusiastic. Once this is decided then look at the two boats...
