I hate to say it but that mirrors the wider community pretty well. Perhaps not the YT thing but as a general rule the man would keep the boat in a given split. I'm certain there are exceptions, there was a lady from Gosport on my VHF course who kept her Halberg Rassey and learned to sail (maybe out of spite...).

Getting back to the original OP .......... This week we are the biggest boat in the Spanish little marina Woo Hoo .!!. Next weeks little teaser is that she has a cry . .... theres a surprise ..

I thought the small marina looked charming .. and I guess the gentle motor down the coast was sort of typical of what a pleasant week of full time cruising involves and funnily enough the up and downs of life does sometimes involve a few tears - I assume over something not too serious.

Sailing Uma has an amazing woman on board and NBJS is totally tough ... I do love sailing Youtubes !!!

I've always assumed that in those cases the wife was never that keen on sailing to start with? But with the youtube "splits" its not just sailing that the man keeps - its the youtubing too. If I had been invited to guess I would have assumed that the video content, story telling, side of things was perhaps favoured by the half of the couple that was less into sailing... it must be a heck of culture shock to quit your sailing adventure AND stop the weekly video making and presumably return to some sort of "normal life".

If I had been invited to guess I would have assumed that the video content, story telling, side of things was perhaps favoured by the half of the couple that was less into sailing... it must be a heck of culture shock to quit your sailing adventure AND stop the weekly video making and presumably return to some sort of "normal life".

The decision to continue being a 'tuber might be mostly financial. And once you've built an audience, bought the gear, and learned how to use it, continuing to vlog might be the most obvious way to keep funding the sailing.

Don't assume they quit YouTube. A channel is just that, a channel. Since these channels are about the boat it makes sense that it goes with the boat. A change in subject would warrant another channel anyway. I have several channels for different things, some more popular than others, and would assume that if they are into YouTube as a hobby or career they will continue with that. They may also choose to take those skills into the more traditional media industries where having a million subscribers would be a great CV entry to use.

but its not uncommon for people to change boat and stick to the same channel or even to arrive at the boat with an existing following (like the subject of the OP, the Wynns, and at least one other I can't remember right now). Perhaps they all go to Insta - 'cos I don't go there so wouldn't see them. I'd be surprised is Youtube never recommended me videos from the "ex" if they are posting on a new topic.

well that was kind of my point - perhaps the move is so diametrically opposite to the sailing one nobody mentions what happens to them but we hear that the "man" continues sailing (possibly on a new boat) and posting. There is of course significant brand equity in the channel and if you walk away without the boat or the channel I'm not sure how good a deal you got!

The two young people you were mocking are now in the Caribbean .. CONGRATULATIONS to them on an Atlantic crossing just 5 months after their first attempt at a cross channel outing was so derided on here .

They did not go to the Med cos Brexit has screwed that.

Good for them Cloona, I think thats great. I have made as far as the blackwater, thanks for asking. You may not have noticed but myhistory ofposting is pretty much all in favour of just go and do it and learn as you go and I certainly never derided their cross channel efforts in the slightest.
Ive tried to be as clear as I can, its the mamufactured omg drama that goes with the youtube stuff that I deride. Its pathetic. I realise they may want to create a product and build an audience, but christ almighty it was just rubbish! Maybe they got better and more interesting, I dont know and life is too short to waste my time looking. If enough folks like it to patreon them so they get a living, then fair do’s, its no concern of mine how others waste their cash.

I think apart from the likes of Leo the intended audience of these type of videos is not the likes of hairy arsed sailors but sweet young things that dream of blue glass like seas and silver sand beaches. The sailing has nothing to do with it even if there is any it's the OMG storm in the marina rocking boat how brave they are moments that their target audience lap up.

I am posting this not to take the rise out of these people but it seems to me that this sort of YouTube excursion into sailing is becoming a regular pot boiler. The bonkers thing is; that they have garnered nearly 30,000 views so far and already have getting on for 10,000 subscribers.

Putting aside doubts that "after saving like mad" they have bought a very nice forty foot ketch, under two years after leaving University. Here is the first episode on the new boat. There were three dreadful trials for the new mariners, including one "Massive Issue":

1) Some gales came through, quite noisy in their marina berth, the boat rocked about.

2) The shocking big one ........The marina said they were full and they would have to find somewhere else next month. Tears of despair.
Later: Marina said they have found them a berth. Tears of joy. Then:

3) More shocks, they had to move the boat to another berth. A challenge but they are learning to take the rough with the smooth. Given help they managed, fortunately the new berth was only ten foot away and they didn't have to start the engine.


It looks like a distinct Blogging phenomenon here, where a personable couple with good video skills hop from one subject to another "following their dream". Another pair with a very similar background did it in the USA making one offshore trip and then selling the boat with a shameless air of "been there done it" to chase the next absolute lifetime ambition.
I must stress that I have nothing against the pair, they seem very pleasant, if they can hack it good luck to them. However at this moment it projects a very odd image of what sailing is about and where the entry expectations might lie.

What's that saying about music? Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach, and those that can't teach, criticise. ISTM that it has a much wider application.

I'll watch those with the personality and skill to make an interesting video. It really doesn't matter if they're pottering about in a lake or tackling Cape Horn. If there's a decorative young lady, so much the better, but she needs to have a lot more to offer than an a ability to not quite fall out of her bikini. No, not offering that sort of thing, you filthy lot
