Yanmar yse12 related q\'s

Hi I have a Yanmar yse12 - and its getting a bit tired so thinking about replacing it this winter.

Getting the old one out - this would be done in the 'yard' - can I use the boom + pulleys to lift it out? or may be rig a frame (wood / angle iron?) to lift it out - how do folks normally do this?

Does anyone have experience of the new Yanmar 3YM20 (20hp) - I haven't checked the mounting positions yet - I guess this + the position of the coupling is critical - I don't really want a lot of messing about with the positioning etc - would the new Yanmar 3ym20 likely to be a better fit (being yanmar) than another engine?

Any other things to watch out for?

cheers

+ is this usually a DIY job ? or would most get a 'specialist' (engine supplier) to do the installation?

hi
the yse 12 is HEAVY poss 150 kg.
suggest the yard lift it.
y not concider the Beta 2 cylinder 15 Hp ? (i think) this should be more than enough for 27 ft @ about 4 tons & as lot cheaper than the yanmar

The only thing that will fit straight back in is another YSE12 (or a YSB). If you want a new engine, pick what ever you want because you will need to change the mounts and engine bed. A newer Yanmar is as much a different fit as any other make.

You're a strong man. I lifted a YSB8 from the workshop floor to the bench yesterday and it took 2 of us - I wouldn't even attempt it on my own.

I replaced my YSE 12 a couple of years ago with a twin cylinder Lombardini. That's the best engine I've ever had - basic, simple, trouble free, easy to service, and about 30% less than the equivalent Volvo or Yanmar. Might be worth a look.

Can you remove it your self - depends on access, with a bit of dismantling of the my YSB got it slid out the engine compartment onto short Scaffold boards (if only one of you use a block pully) , then borrowed the chain hoist and gallows to lift it out.

Replacing with another yanmar (at least the GM series) means the exhaust is on the same side, so you don'y need to reroute. Also GM series require beds to be built up which is a lot easier - check height available.

Happy with my 2GM20 but BETA have also got a good reputation

I would recommend the Beta 20hp as I fitted to my Sabre. Speak to Beta as I believe they now provide mounts to suit existing situations. Also speak to members of the S27OA as a number have opted for the Beta.

I had a YSE8 rebuilt and it's terrific - runs like a draeam and a lot more powerful than when it conked out (took about 40 or so hours to run in, though) .Having it done properly was less thn half the cost of having it replaced. Spend the money you save on your wife!

I have lifted out engines using a 'chain' hoist on the boom. (Had to move the main halyard to a point on the boom above the lifting point to strengthen things up a bit). Where is your boat and yard? - I have a chain hoist sitting in the garage doing nothing, but as you will see from the profile, I am near Plymouth.
