Seen many posts hereabouts regarding the high price of Volvo Spares, but I'd always viewed Yanmar as being more reasonably priced.

My view is now being challenged however. I've just received a bill of a little under £200 for an exhaust elbow (part only) for a 2GM20, which seems excessive. I've had a quick web trawl to try and find a priced part for comparison but haven't found anything.

What does the panel think? Have I been done or am I simply out of touch with the high cost of spares?

That does seem expensive but I've no experience of Yanmar prices.
The exhaust elbow for a Perkins Perama M20 is about £150, whilst the Volvo Penta 2020 is about £110 - same base engine but with the VP uses Ø45 hose & the Perkins uses Ø2" - just sleeved it with a rubber pipe to fit my Ø2" hose(courtesy of Volspec at Tollesbury).
Have you tried http://www.asapsupplies.com to see if they do a pattern part?

I had to pay 136.27 Euros for the insert for the exhaust elbow for a Volvo Penta 2003T. Volvo Penta will not answer any request to justify this price.

To clarify what I got. Two ss pressings clumsily welded together

Also try Keypart in Watford, they might be able to help.

about a year ago you could buy yanmar spares from the USA and then yanmar stopped this by enforcing territorial agreements on their agents which leaves UK residents with no other option than to buy from the UK .... The US suppliers had more comprehensive stocks (bigger market, for one) of parts and could, typically, deliver faster than the UK and cheaper ...

you could be more persistent (with US) .. it might pay dividends ..

Here in Canada John Deere use yanmar in their garden and lawn equipment, the parts are much cheaper, perhaps the farm dealers in the UK could be a help, in the case of the water cooled elbow probaly not, for most engine parts perhaps

I have just rebuilt my Yanmar cqm15 for a total parts bill of just under £700,some prices i thought a bit high like the engine gasket set which did not include the head gasket for £94.71 and thermostat at £27 but overall I am happy with piston rings at £67 a set, valves at £16 each and very good value i think Yanmar engine mounts at £19.In my last boat i had a Volvo which needed the same amount of work which even 10 years ago far exceeded this amount and therefore made it a mooring clump.I now expect another 25 years of use.

Could you provide more information about these replacement Yanmar exhaust elbows, De La Hunty marine deny all knowledge of anything other than the genuine Yanmar part at £118 + VAT for my 1GM. Who is D. Chesterman?

Replaced damper disc on 3GM30F last year. 305 Euro from Kapelos Diesels in Athens (Yanmar importers for Greece). Yanmar spares are said to be among the most expensive brands. Don't know how the high reliability vs. high spare prices calculation comes out.

Let's be honest the exhaust elbow looks worth about £10 retail and probably costs about £2 max to make in quantity. If it was anywhere approaching £200 a full engine on that basis would cost about £200,000 with a decent discount. They just charge what people will pay and you have to look at overall running costs which in my admitted limited experience with a 3Gm isn't much for the use it's had.

Whilst I won't comment on the overall cost of Yanmah spares one thing that is obvious is that you can get them just about anywhere in the world.
That has to be a plus in my book?
