not got a gallion, but did fit two new 1GM's to my cat last year, might be able to answer any general questions, extra's required etc.

It doesn't get much tighter than in narrow multi - hulls either, so will probably have had less space than you to play with?

Julian, would like to know your over all cost for [one] engine installation, if it is possible to itemise stuff and cost, you are speaking to a novice,I have recently resorted to buying a new 15hp yahama o/b since it seemed like endless problems.I live and sail in the caribbean.and everything would have to be shipped from the uk. Thanks ,David

i also fitted yanmars in my cat. i used saildrives and mounted the units on a grp plinth supplied as an extra by the yanmar dealer. the engines were supplied with wiring harness and control panel so i needed to add fuel tank and primary filter, water strainer, exhaust with waterlock, muffler and gooseneck and a battery.

costs were roughly:
tank & filter £200
strainer £35
exhaust £200

most of the components are listed in the vetus catalogue.

these were prices in the uk. when i had to have a rebuild of one engine in st lucia the engine parts were flown in from miami and the total job was about 20% cheaper than the same in the uk.

here is what my costs per hull came out to;

Engine 1GM10 - £2100.00
Bore out yanmar coupling to 1" from 3/4" supplied - £8.00
Flexible coupling - £41.12
Vetus water lock - £45.00 approx
exhaust hose 6ft £40.00 approx
anti syphon valve - £40.00 inc delivery
Battery cables - £10.00 home build from new components
Bronze exhaust outlet and 90º bend for goosneck - £20.00 approx inc sealants
Inlet skin fitting and valve - £25.00 approx
Fuel pipes iso grade - £50.00
First oil, then oil and filter at 50hrs - £25.00
Engine hour timer - £26.00
Tacho (farra) - £38.00

Total £2468.12 or £4936.24

I had props, shafts and stern tubes fitted, also fuel tank and filters though I need to replace these, I have seen filters with water traps new for about £40.00 but not shopped around yet. I also had morse cable controllers fitted, these are about £80.00 for a nice vetus one, you can get them much cheaper though. I also had morse cables.

Wow, I have scared my self now, and I had two mirrored installations, not cheap. I did not buy everything in one shot, the hour meters, tacho's and anti syphons I added later. I wonder how much value these added in reallity to the boat?

No, I don't want to know.

great site

90% of the replies are helpful and 30% really informative. you just have to learn to ignore the small minority which imply you're an idiot for asking the question or the refugees from scuttlebut who try to make everything a joke.

i have occasionally asked questions on technical IT forums and 80% of the replies there are of the 'what a stupid question' type so we are very lucky with this one.
