I am currently unable to silence my alarm. I have cleaned out the pipework and thermostat and water is getting through the engine. I ran it for thirty minutes without any sign of over-heating. I've ordered a new temperature switch. Has anyone had similar problems. Have I missed something.

Take the alarm sensor out of the engine, and tes it by putting it in cold water and measuring resistance, then putting it in near boiling water and doing the same. In one of these tests the sensor will be open circuit and in one it will be closed. If it doesnt change from one to the other - replace it. If it does change, then you either have an engine prob (unlikely from what you say) or an electrical prob.

I assume you have put your hand in the exhaust water and discovered that it comes out warm when the engine has warmed up. It should not be so hot on a raw water cooled engine that you cannot bear your hand in it - and it should not stay cold either.

<hr width=100% size=1>this post is a personal opinion, and you should not base your actions on it.

If the alarm sounds when the engine is started from cold then it is either the sensor or the wiring, if you remove the wire from the sensor and the alarm still goes then it is a wiring problem. If the alarm stops then it is the sensor.

If this is a problem when the engine is running under normal conditions then i would check the pump is providing a decent pressure from its output by removing the hose from the t-junction and running breifly, you should have a considerable amount of water.
I have also found the anode can errode considerably and partially block the water galleries.

Hi
On my 1GM10 the alarm is shared between the water temp sender and the oil pressure sender are you sure it is the water that is causing you trouble ?
If you unplug each one in turn it should show up which system is causing your problem
