Just be aware that location is a month out of date according to marinetraffic AIS. If the French coastguard have reports of it floating could they supply you with coordinates. If it is still in the biscay area there are vessels who have been towing yachts damaged by orcas in. So if you get reports with coordinates you might be able to charter one to look.
Is the insurance able to pay?

Good afternoon,
Thank you for taking the time to reply and your condolences'.
Firstly, we are not able to access any insurance paperwork as of yet. Dealing with such financial matters is proving tricky as we have no death certificate and are looking at other routes to do this. Even if the boat were insured (we don't know if it is or not), we don't think that the insurance company would pay out for this. We can't imagine recovery being worthwhile either. Although we would really be interested to see if there was anything left inside the vessel, we realise that we will never be able to get out there. I think it's 50 miles out to sea. We are hoping that the French Coastguard can come up with ideas other than us being sent huge bill which we can't afford to pay for recovery of the boat.

Hello,
sorry for your loss. I tried to send you a PM (forum private messages) but I think as you have just registered PMs are not enabled. You may already be registered in YBW with another nickname (?), if so send me a PM and I will reply a couple of thoughts about how to proceed. Of course full discretion assured.
All the best,
r.
I am not able to PM.

Boat insurance, even at the lower end of the market often includes wreck removal cover. This is because marinas etc “insist” on it. (Although many don’t check it). So if he had been in a marina or similar before he left it may well be insured. Of course it’s possible that the policy did not extend that far offshore.

It would if you were the insurer and it caused a further incident resulting in significant loss.

I don’t see how it is in any way “your problem” financially. It might be the estate’s liability, although even that seems tenuous. However which nation is leading the accident investigation? I would have expected if the MAIB were involved they would have enough interest in the boat and its content to facilitate its recovery.
