What a sad story.

I have some bad memories of Lacanau. Back in 1989 or 90 I broke the mast of my windsurfer sailing there in some big waves, got caught in a rip current and thought I was going to drown. Luckily I managed to get myself out of it by ditching the rig and paddling in on the board. The rig made its own way ashore a bit later.

I think it's one of these. Very sad and hard to understand the decisions leading up to the incident.

Edit: These were built using Airex foam core which would make them unsinkable like Sadlers. But not a safe place to stay in huge seas in January.

As he was British then i assume the MAIB will perform an investigation. At least this means that all the details including why he was out at sea will become clear.

The boat at appeared to be USA flagged for some reason and out of UK waters so maybe not. Since the boat was lost not sure what they would investigate anyway, not really any lessons to be learnt.

I think you are right about the jurisdiction but wrong about the lessons. The maib would look at the pressures and reasons for leaving when such cinditions were forecast. But i think if US flsgged and outside uk waters.

The related NavWarning indicates a derelict vessel with ''lots of debris nearby'', including a white liferaft.

Good afternoon,
Can you still see the location of this vessel please? Can you post a pic? It was due to sink "within hours" when it was found but is apparently still bobbing about - posing a risk to marine traffic.
Thanks.

According to AIS it hasn't updated its position for 1 month and 11 days. Makes sense as the batteries and instruments would not have stayed on for more than a couple of days.

It's the one right in the middle of the chartlet, coordinates below; official nav warning dated march 6

Add. Note it says "Re[t]ourne" = misses letter T but means capsized.

Thank you Roberto.
The family of the capsized vessel have been asked to recover it. We have no idea how to go about it or where to start. This location is helpful.

First of all, sorry for your loss.

What a nightmare for you, having the wreck salvage put in your court - how come the insurance aren't dealing with it?

Can you offer it to the French navy for target practice? I can't imagine recovery being worthwhile?

Hello,
sorry for your loss. I tried to send you a PM (forum private messages) but I think as you have just registered PMs are not enabled. You may already be registered in YBW with another nickname (?), if so send me a PM and I will reply a couple of thoughts about how to proceed. Of course full discretion assured.
All the best,
r.
