Yachtdatabase

Found this the other day. Might be worth looking up your yacht's data if it is held.
Bit more data than the excellent sailboatdata website. Just put your boat details in Boat Type.

Boat Reviews - Sailboats, Motorsailers, Motor boats, Dinghies, Inflatables, Other boats
I looked up my boat, and it tells me that it would not be accepted in major ocean races. Which I suspect would come as news to the sisterships that won the Fastnet and several Transatlantic races.
It also got the LOA wrong.

So I looked up some others, and I've yet to find one single successful offshore racing design that would actually be accepted into major ocean races according to that website.

I then looked up a Westerly 41. And on the section headed "interior" it usefully said "The boat is equipped with a galley." Nothing else.

Nice idea, but the data seems at best patchy.

The entry for my Gib'Sea 96 is a work of fiction.

Sleeps 6-8! Really? Where have the extra two berths appeared from. Six onboard is 'cosy'.

As for the comment about the hull
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.
Who only spends a few hours a year on cleaning the hull?

Oh well, my westerly longbow will obviously be a much better candidate for ocean racing :) :)
“Stability and Safety
What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Westerly Longbow is 1.81, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races”

And apparently Bradwell 18’s have toilets ( they don’t) and may have daggerboards ( they don’t)

The site is a good idea but a good illustration of the dangers of AI. The flaws in some of the data mean that none of the data can be relied on.

They are open to correction. Oddly enough I came across it a few days ago, too, and pointed out errors. Some have been corrected.

Some of the information for my boat is correct, length/size for various parts of the rigging and sails, but I'm still trying to find the Galley which it tells me is aboard my boat...somewhere. Once all owners have contacted them and put them straight it might be useful. :giggle:

If you've launched a website and rely on others to correct your data...

I checked the entry for my Moody 31 mk 2, and it was broadly correct, but presented a lot of material in a simplistic and patronising style. There was one major error - it states that the Moody 31 has a fin keel. Many (most?) do, but bilge keels were an option.

It's nice to know I could go ocean racing if I felt like it!

Yes, a shame.

I know little about AI, but it seems to reap scraps off the internet. make a comparison, and then present it's evaluations as fact. Some of it is obvious nonsense, all of it is best treated with caution and most, probably best ignored.
