50-55k is not a bad price range.... but will exclude the best Bene 361's .....

Couldn't have put it better myself!

Suggest you stetch the budget, Phil.

There was also a good point made about up-dating electronics ;)

Bear also in mind that your chosen sail cruising ground has some very tretcherous waters and it may be wise to buy a local boat and keep in close contact with the last owner.

Perhaps we should discuss this more on Saturday evening. The price will be proportional to blood alcohol content, though :D

Thats an interesting comment - are you trying to sell him somehting?

Yes but he's not biting!

The last time the OP was enjoying a nightcap aboard my pride and joy I noted a spark of interest. Forever the optimist, I'll force lots of booze down his neck when I see him on Saturday and secure the deal ;)

Moving from the dark side is never going to be easy, though. One memorable weekend after a pleasant evening bbq with a few forumites, we were rounding The Stacks at slack water, heading back to home port, my wife, head over the transom, asking that I kill her to stop the mal de mar, a certain mobo flew by doing 20 kts. Forget those halcyon days my friend :D

Ah, but I can drink more than you having been trained by professionals, I'll have swopped you for my mobo by 10pm Sat :D

That's not entirely true, it was 15 knots :p. Well if you can, you will, but I bet I used more fuel that trip than you have all season!

Thanks for all ther input guys, transom wise, so long as we can safely get on and off the dinghy ashore with the dog we'll be happy. Ladder over the side is a good idea but not sure about man handling Jimmy (the dog) over the side and back late at night and early in the morning. Worh a thought though. Safe and secure cockpit is more important than size, ideally we'd like a Westerly Oceanquest, but a little outside the price range!

I've got one and it's just been reduced....but it's still over the budget sadly. Nice boat though.

Your Jimmy's not a small dog is he? Would a harness with a handle on the back help? Would you be able to hoick him up out of the dink?

Our Fudge should be small enough to throw ashore given how close I usually anchor. We shall see next year.

If I can sell my mobo in 2012 I'll be joining you rag and stick merchants, so I'm after a few suggestions on what might be a good boat for us. Requirements are;

Easy, safe access at transom for climbing in and out of dinghy, dog included.
Good sized and comfortable main cabin, aft cabin preferred.
Safe cockpit with a good bit of space in it.
All lines coming back to cockpit.
Good seaworthiness
Reasonably easy to handle for two
Would be good if it could take the ground but not essential.
Views on shaft drive v saildrive would also be useful.
Preferred length 34-36' ish

Budget £50-£55k.

Anybody want to swop :)

By aft cabin do you mean centre cockpit?

It sound to me like you need a no frills modern GRP production yacht made by Beneteau, Jenneau or Bavaria. They meet all you requirements and offer good value sailing. Depending on your layout requirements and cabin numbers, you can then match size & age to price.

Best of luck.

Take to the ground? Good seaworthyness?

TBH, there is only one way - do the legwork.

Spend the next 6 months or so visiting boatyards & having a good sniff around. It's great fun & will help you to better understand what is important & what isn't - especially in the interiors as you discuss the pros & cons of layouts.

You will have some surprises as you explore - some good, some bad, but every one will help you learn what will suit you best. Once you have narrowed it down see if you can sail a few, charter or test sails or mate's boats. Don't forget to keep an eye on boats that you think are out of budget, bargains do crop up now & then, be ready to grab one if it happens.

If you are ever down Gosport way I'll be more than happy to show you and your partner over my (not for sale) boat which at 35'8'' meets your criteria.

She is ashore and empty at the mo' which will give you a good chance for a poke around to view the construction methods. There's a lot of tosh spouted about modern boats. By people who don't own them :)

Also happy to talk to you about how the two of us manage the sailing side of things and when we are launched I'm more than happy to take you both out for a sail.

pm me if interested.

Piccy of us anchored in The Rance ... cost to get here ??? Less than a tenner :)
