I might be able to help depending on the 'when' and possibly the 'what is it'. Would cost you my train fare back to Cowes...!

When I bought our first boat, a Centaur, I also didn't have the experience to sail from Hamble to Conwy so hired an instructor via Hamble School of Yachting and used the trip to do DS practical. Excellent learning exercise and cheaper than delivery crew or road transport.

Pick some nice quiet weather over Xmas, plus woolies

We did it in January, one stop at Falmouth and the engine packed up an hour out so had to sail the rest of the way. No battery charging = no heater or tiller pilot, bloody cold.
Long time ago I knew a chap who on several occasions left the UK for the Canaries at Xmas ,quiet weather and northerlies.

I'd second Halcyon yachts. Very quick to respond to email and transparent pricing. Was happy with their service on a trip that included that routing.

You've had a possible offer of free help already, you might get one or two more if you tell us a bit more about the boat, i.e. is she properly good to go or a bit of an unknown? Have you any experience at all? FWIW I did the same in reverse in July solo & anchored at Weymouth & Start Bay (Lyme Bay) on the way. As long as you have a reasonable weather window & can keep warm why not try to do it yourself (with help) for the experience?

It should be the way to go, 30 foot boat 3 to 4 days maximum with two stops he should be able to get a good forecast that will cover that over the next couple of months and is likely to clock up more engine hours than sailing hours.

For want of a better resource, the Almanac has a list of all recommended safety gear for coastal cruising. It also has a proforma/template to help with passage planning per SOLAS.

Doing it yourself would be great experience, if you have the time and can get a bit of help, as looks to have already been offered. There’s a crew wanted section within the forum.

Please tell us a little more about the vessel?

Is there a reason why you’re considering having it delivered? Another alternative could be hiring a skipper for “owner assist”, also available from any of the Delivery Companies.

I would also recommend Halcyon, but no reason why you shouldn’t go along too, to learn about sailing and your yacht. They will tell you what safety gear is required, but expect it to be fairly comprehensive.

We used a delivery skipper for moving the boat from the Hamble to Anglesey 10 years back now. We were still working so couldn’t take a lot of time off but we had the Easter weekend to do it: weather looked good so we went along too being prepared to “jump ship” at Falmouth or Milford Haven if the weather turned against us.
In the event, it took us three days to make the trip with a short stop at Falmouth. Showed up lots of minor niggles on the boat and gave us both a useful experience of long(ish) distance sailing. And cost about £750 in fees and rail fares.

This shows the expedience of using a delivery company/skipper. By comparison, we did the same Hamble to Anglesey trip 6 years ago. It took us 10 days. Fair tide day sailing (except for the Newlyn to Milford Haven leg). Anchorages, buoys and pontoon berths. We waited a couple of days in Newlyn for the northerlies to pass. A very pleasant experience, but we had the time and inclination to do it.

It would be sensible to spend a day or three test sailing in the Solent, to see what works on board the new-to-you boat - and what does not!

Thanks for your kind offer , The boat is westerly Konsort and on first view looks to be I fairly good condition . Has all the usual navigation equipment ,plus radar . I am hoping to go down to her after the holidays are over and give it a survey and test all the gear , The engine is only a few years old . I am a marine engineer and have sailing previous sailing experience but not for any distance . Once sale completed it can go on a mooring and the be brought back to Falmouth any time before the end of March .
will keep updated as sale progresses
