Looks to me like a small table (for drinks etc) that clamps round a mast. Is yours keel stepped? Or perhaps you have a mizzen that passes through the cockpit?

- Why the support brackets underneath?
- Why the squared-off shape to one side of the hole?
Note also that the tip of one of the underneath brackets protrudes into the hole and is shaped to fit into the sail luff groove.
It may not be a table, but whatever it is, it quite clearly clamps around a mast.

Clamps around mast-pointy thing goes in sail track- wedgy thing keeps it "square" to mast (can't tilt). All guesses!
What to use it for--no idea. Fun guessing though!

hmm, the mast theory looks very sound, but items placed on it will fall off as the boat heels and pitches - no fiddles.

If you did clamp it around the mast in the cabin, would it be in a convenient place to hold a cup of tea or glass of gin while lounging on a bunk? I made a somewhat similar shelf that fitted round Kindred Spirit's compression post - mine had small fiddles, but the maker of this one might not have bothered for harbour use?

People sometimes cover the mast with pretty fabric or nautical ropework, but if it's not covered then yes, the luff groove will be visible. The aluminium extrusion is the same all the way along.

I've got one, but without the clamps.
It's only trim. It sits on the cabin lining where the mast comes through the cabin roof. It makes for a nicer view if you are in your bunk looking upwards.
It's removable to make it easier to get the mast in and out.

It could fix around a persons neck, to prevent spillage from fray bentos pies.
