Worst boat names

Often wondered if some peeps give their boat a stupid name on purpose to say 'look at me' ?

Who would name their boat...............'Morning Gorgeous'

One I do like, also in Gosport is ........Salve Nauta

A Hunter 42 in East Cowes Marina, "Breaking Wind". I can't even look at it any more.

There is a Catamaran that often appears in Cowes named "Wet Pussy"

The Vessels name should pay the vessel a compliment or at least I think that it should.

Simes

Our boat has been named twice by previous owners "Catspaw" which sounds nice, and the current name that we don't much care for "Juicy Blue" we could change it but...well are we bothered...nah not really..leave it as it is.

Didn't change the name of the first two boats as they were quite nice ...

Didn't like "Andromeda of ... " for the current one ... so she now has a name that means "Naturally" ... quite apt for a sailing boat we thought.

I came accross a Benny 47.7 this week called 'Exocet Strike' which takes the biscuit as being the worst name I've seen in a long time, aggravated by it's being berthed in Plymouth.

There's a boat in Ramsgate that looks like it is probably raced called Indecision, which could be a worry if calling starboard on him, and I saw one in Titchmarsh this year called Poltroon, which could embarass in that difficult VHF conversation with the Coastguard!

Good job its not in Pompey. I have oppos who were on the Sheff who would I am certain have a re-naming ceremony :D

There is a motor boat locally called 'Phimosis'. Suffice to say that it is a medical term and it is hard to imagine why anyone would choose it as a boat name!!

The other thing that struck me around the marina this weekend, is how the more poorly built, oversized and less of a sea-boat they are, the greater the propensity for a ludicrously aspirational name. The propper boats in on our pontoon, the ones capable of making passages past Rame Head for reasons better than their sheer size, all have lovely friendly names (a Starlight 35 called Bagpuss caught my eye) where as 'Far Off Shores' really should never leave the marina if there is more than a F4 and was clearly built to be stern to in the med.

I have a totally irrational hatred of any boat called "Sea (anything)". It just seems to be stating the bleedin' obvious, you might as well just stick "boat" on the end of the name. Something like Sea Fever or Sea Mist is just about acceptable, but anything like "Sea Wanderer, Sea Gypsy" is just awful. "Sea Pelican, Sea Terrier" is even worse! I have visions of some web-footed little yapping thing with gills, wagging his...erm, dorsal fin.

But, for REALLY bad names, you have to think whether other people listening on CH16 will burst out laughing if you are unlucky enough to have to put out a Mayday call. And there's an owner of a very nice racing boat on the Lymington River, who might one day have to say...

"Mayday, mayday, mayday. This is yacht I Say...Ding Dong, I Say...Ding Dong, I Say...Ding Dong":D

My Trapper 500 came already named 'Booby Trap'. I feel a pr*t on Channel 16 (especially when admitting a grounding to the Coastguard) and we normally refer to the boat as BT.....

However, superstition prevents me renaming her! Incidentally a friend of mine has a 707 called Joe Blob.........
