It would appear the consensus is that women are no good as skippers ... would it therefor hold that they are good crew as they usaually know their place and do as they are told?
In an emergency, I would rather have a crew of old ladies than some of the stupid macho know-alls that you find swaggering round marinas.
The only rigging damage I have ever suffered in moderate weather (below force 8) was due to a yachtmaster to whom we gave a lift Gib-Canaries, who thought he knew it all, and re-rove our genoa sheet while he was on watch.
Ah! Yes! Tachtmasters, I tend to agree, I'd rather have a load of old women than most yachtmasters on board. That should get the pulses going! Eh, Bill!
I sail most of the time with my wife and sometimes my eldest daughter comes too. They are both extremely competent and fun to sail with. Last year, when my wife could not come on a cruise, I took an old friend. Apart from trying to run us on the rocks off Herm, he proved to be a real misery. Then i did a delivery with a couple of guys which was a real joy, every one knew what they were doing and did it without being asked.
When I was racing my daughter was part of the crew and was an extremely effective helm, and did the bow if our regular could not come. I do not thinnk there is anything one way or the other. Women do tend to be a bit less strong than men but if theyhave been brought up to sail they are as affective as any man
A few years ago when my daughter was 15, she and her female friends raced and won Burnham Week in my Stella [26ft].I was on board but only as a passenger.I was worried what the insurers might say in the event of a claim.
However, most people congratulated me, not her, on doing well, probably because they didn't like the idea of being beaten by a bunch of girlies.
I actually sail most of the tome with my wife & 3 daughters ... never had a problem really. The youngest (8) is an absolute natural helmswoman! I've just got to get an occasional gripe in!
I discussed this thread with Laurel, my wife, who has been my crew for more than 55 years. In the last 26 years we have cruised nearly 100, 000 miles together, most of it with just the two of us, and in the last 15 years in an 87 feet three masted schooner rigged barge with very seldom any one else on board. We have had gales. Laurel is a cripple. I would value her above rubies, not only for her ability in a boat (she has won two RCC medals in that time) but also as companion, cook, and the person who holds my hand and consoles me when I make a bollocks of it. Oh, and lover too.
Bill! For goodness sake, I think people were just having a giraffe, I value any of the people who sail with me regular, women or men, I tend to agree about women, the ones that are commited to it and you, are a gift from heaven. You can put up with a partner who is not a great sailor, if they have the qualities you need in a person, the biggest IMHO being trust and a sense of humour! My sense of humour sometimes gets lost! Plus, any women that puts up with me, has to be a saint anyway!
I'm sure I am going to get it in the neck from people over this, both from on here and from girlies I know, but should women be allowed on yachts? I mean they are not very spacially aware and stuff....
I would have thought that is the plural of bollock. Personally I would go for Calamari. From my experience I'd repectfuly suggest that women are selectively spatially aware .. if they know where an expensive posh frock is they can find it immediately!
