Kemer in Turkey for the winter

We are currently overwintering in Malta, with the view to head east and cruise Greece and Turkey the coming 2007 season. Our intial plan was to overwinter somewhere like Marmaris, but on following the weather temperatures for Marmaris and the Turkish coast on the internet, find them to be well below zero a lot of the time. We have been seeing ‘current observations’ of 0 degC at 3pm in the afternoon local time, with forecasts of -12degC….man, that’s COLD, bhurrr!

We are permanent liveaboards, so stay aboard all winter so climate is important to us. We now think we would do better to cruise Greece and then return to Malta for the winter.

Can anyone who has overwintered in Marmaris/Turkey, please give us any ‘real world’ idea of climate for the liveaboard cruiser over wintering there?

Many Thanks in advance

Wayne

Well, I know the winter temperature history of Kalamata, but not Marmaris.

Over the last 40 years the temperature in Kalamata has never dropped below freezing for more than 48 hours, except on one occasion (4 days between -4C and 2C in 2004). That bout of cold weather froze and broke all the water meters in the marina, killed off 50% of the lemon trees and lost the orange crop for the season.

So, don't winter anywhere where they don't crop citrus!

I have spent two winters in Marmaris Yacht Marine and have never experienced 0C during the day. You will have the occasional night frost but the sun usually heats up the day pretty quickly. In my experience the temperature range is 10-20C during the winter with some exceptions both side of the range. Marmaris is situated in a very protected bay with lots of warm water around to keep the climate very temperate and nice. Marmaris also has the largest winter live-aboard community in the Med and that is not only because it is very reasonably priced. It is a very nice place with world-class yacht service. I can fully recommend it.

Hi wayne
What is it like in malta in the winter temperature good but as we have the grandchrildren visiting us is there anywhere that they can swim or play in the sand.
We are in Kemer this winter not at present still at home but weather in Kemer cool western med warmer friend there 22deg

Hi Geoff

The weather so far this winter in Malta has been very Mild. Daytime temp at the moment is between 15-20degC and nighttime temps are often above or around 10degC. I think the lowest temp we've seen is about 7degC. For diving and swimming water temp is currently 18degC (was 24deg when we arrived in October).

There are a number of places to swim from, but mainly off smooth, flat rocky areas, as Malta has very few beaches. There is a beach at St. Georges Bay but it is a bus ride from the Marinas.

I would highly recommend Malta as an overwinter stop, we're have a great time.

Re: Rain in SW Peloponese

Kalamata gets about the same amount of rain as London. Not very far inland, over the mountains, is a lot wetter.

Nearly all the coastal rain falls from late October to April. It doesn't rain often, but when it does, it's typical Mediterranean - bucketfulls all in one enormous dollop - then back to dry again. It's a very similar season to west Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Bodrum. Don't know about Marmaris. Never wintered there.

Corfu has a longer wet season - say mid September to mid May - and nearly twice as much total rainfall.

Hi QuietFlight

Many Thanks for your kind words about the website. Its nice to know that people visit and pleased you enjoyed it. We are currently working on a big update - info covering our past 2006 season, i.e. port/harbour notes, narratives, pics etc. As we don't get much time to add alot of content while cruising in the summer we try and catch up during the winter.

Once again, Many Thanks - Hope you realise your cruising dreams soon.

Best wishes

Wayne

Hi, I would also like to add my favourable comments about your website. I think most of us who are planning to sail off would be impressed with your voyage so far. I'm very interested in the costs and funding of a voyage like yours, are you likely to add any details of this to your site?
Regards and good luck,
Allan

Hi Allan

Again, Many Thanks for your kind words about the site. Its always interesting to hear what info people might like to read about of our voyaging life. As financing and budgeting for cruising is a big part of the 'sell up and set sail' lifestyle, it would be a great idea to add this info to the site. We have kept very detailed records of our expenses to date, so would be happy to include a section on the topic. As mentioned earlier in this thread, we are working on an update of port info/cruising notes at the moment so will add this to the list.

Many thanks for your input, interest and support.

Cheers

Wayne
