This is the first time I have kept her in the water for the winter
Today I had an absolutely fantastic sail with my son and it was worth several such days in the summer. Fast sailing in an offshore breeze and although cold it was not nithering and we had a great time whilst others were worrying about xmas.
Winter sailing when the opportunity arises is definitely worth thinking about for those , like me , who had not thought it a sensible option

We always stay in and have had some fabulous sails through the winter. The best part is that you get most places pretty much to yourself; try getting along side the ISC pontoon for lunch in July and August!!

I have been out thursday, friday, saturday

some marvelous sailing

Kip has 100 empty berths between November and April

So, how much a month would you be prepared to pay for pontoon space through the winter?

I am currently paying £100 a month for my 26 footer

worth every penny.

I like being on the boat at night with good web and the fan heater - and I repaired the spay hood and got a coast of varnish on cabin brightwork.

Some splendid drinking sessions to be had with the few remaining residents

We had a great family sail on Boxing Day last year. I used the boat to get to the office Christmas party last week.

We'll have a quick lift out for scrub and anodes at some point, but the boat's staying in commission otherwise.

Went for a Solent potter on Sat, o/n in Newtown Creek, visibility on that wonderful Monet-point between mist and fog, paddled up Clamerkin Lake on the canoe (tks Bav34!), the local seals came over to see what was going on, sailed back Sunday morning, well mostly motored as <5kts true,, about 30 angling vessels off Gilkicker Point, what's not to like?

Did Gran Canaria and back last week. Taking a cat out with a charter group tomorrow. Off on Boxing Day for five days locally.
What's not to like?

Yeah, yeah, I know........;)

Our for a wonderful 5 hours yesterday. Wind about 15, temperature about +2. Then a 6 foot wind-over-current wave crashed the length of the boat and soaked the spinnaker in the cockpit and my head. No problem. Another beautiful day in paradise.

I have had a couple of very pleasant sails out on the tide only 3 hours, but great considering it was in Morecambe bay, tides are all wrong for Boxing Day unfortunate, but I always sail through the winter, lift out at Glasson dock in March for a couple of weeks, it seems to be the only advantage to being old I can go out when I want.

Just back from another winter sail today. October and November were very much sunnier and calmer than usual on the Clyde (even compared to "summer"!), though very cold. So managed 9 winter sails so far - and, unlike the "pilot house" naysayers, not needed oilskins for any of the winter sails :-)

But that weather pattern has certainly changed - and going to be very differnt from now on. Batten down the hatches!

Nithering

Fast sailing in an offshore breeze and although cold it was not nithering and we had a great time whilst others were worrying about xmas.

Nithering. That's a good word. Sums certain conditions up perfectly.

Must be ten years or more since we've stayed in the water beyond December, but we did have some amazing winter sails while on the Clyde at that time.

Re: Nithering

Last month in S Brittany. Much preferable to the crowds in August, when my boat's on the hard for R & R.
