Winter fuel allowance?

I believe that it is given automaticaly to persons over 62 who are UK residents

That didn't happen for me. All I got was an email saying that I might be eligible and if I wanted to claim then I could do so. I'm in no-man's-land between 62 and getting my pension at 65.

Not only is it not automatic there is a cut-off date by which you have to claim it. I missed it by one day.

This is more of a correct definition of what actually happens, I fit the same criteria, the same thing happened to me.

Thanks to this thread, I have just appiled for my first winter fuel allowance. I did get an email but it wasn't really very clear. I thought that I had to be on benefits to get it. The only problem now is that Mrs Dipper already gets her £200 automatically and I suspect that I will be given £100 and Mrs Dipper will be asked for £100 of hers back.

I had been claiming full amount as my wife is younger. When she qualified, we both got it her first year - not split between us. Not wanting to arrive home and find bailiffs on the doorstep, I telephoned to advise them of mistake and the reply was "just keep it, it costs too much for us to reclaim and we have no system for you to repay".

Thanks for that info Graham.

I'll have to have a go! I think Norway would count! Also I was living in the UK in the week in question in September, visiting my family as I do at that time each year! Worth a go?
