Hi All
How's the fishing reports in your area??? The reports from both private and commercial boys around here are pointing to the worst season for Cod so far!!
only a couple of 20 pounders been caught so far and one trawler has not had any cod for over a week!!!! So how are other regions doing??
I am taking my Mother home tomorrow and will probably spend a day or so in the Medway area is it worth me taking some kit with me ???

From what I hear not many cod being shore caught off the North Cornish Coast, But the good news is Bass are still being caught all round the coast.

Would be interested in hearing what the shore fishing off Chesil Beach is like at the moment, usually go up for a couple days this time of the year, "Abbottsberry" To try for a decent cod !..
Can do all the boat fishing I like, but still enjoy fishing from the shore !

For reports of catches you can get an idea from the PBSBAC site. Not an astounding amount by all accounts.
As for fishing the Medway. dunno, but speaking to people its either hit or miss. Miss more often than not.

Suppose what area you live in has a lot to do with what and how much success you have !
But Bass fishing from the shore here has always being good, especially if you know what you are doing ! Biggest mistake made here for Bass fishing is overcasting, most of the fish are under the rod tip. IMHO.

Boat fishing for Cod down here means hard work, especially over a wreck ! okay if you want to fill the freezer occassionly, much prefer drifting over inshore reefs for Pollack, Skin em out ,dip them in batter, hard to tell the difference from Cod, well to my taste buds anyway !
Good sport as well, much easier than hauling Cod up from the depths !..

Fully agree with You about the Bass we have some superb spots on the Gower coast !!
Water depth here in the channel at most is 100ft that is fishable with the tide race we have!!! most of the cod here are in 30/80 ft water!!! as you say deep water wrecks are for body builders !! to me that's hard work and lttle fun!! IMHO of course.
This time of year we get plaqued with last summers spawning of schoolie Bass they along with the Doggies rob all the bait before anything else gets achance!!!

I might try a nice genteel day on the Lougher estuary for flounders!! Now there a place to moore your boat and go fishing from!! Fairly shallow and the tide goes out for MILES and sand banks everywhere! you should see the tide race there!! A deadly area that the locals just shrug at and say "so whats the matter with you, won't bring your boat round you some kind of whimp!" Yep!! On some really big tides whole sand banks have shifted so what was there oneday does'nt hold that it will be there the next! not an area for the novice.

Hi
Chesil is fishing a bit hit and miss at the moment and the Cod /Codling are very thin on the ground ,been about 6 times since Nov and only had 1 at 4.5 lb.
Plenty of Doggies, and when the Whiting come in none stop action .

Try this site for more up to date info on Chesil http://www.jolliff.fsnet.co.uk/

The fishing up here on the fylde coast is non existant at the moment. You can normaly expect to catch 20--30 cod up to about 8lb per tide plus the odd double figure fish. all that seems to be about are whiting and dogs. It is the worst winter fishing I can remember.

Cod are hard to find on the Blackwater estuary, and also thin on the ground in the Thames, nothing offshore, the sprats are in and what fish there are are chasing them, a Thornback is possible and maybe a late bass. Always bad at this time of year but this will not stop us from going, if you don't go you don't know.

We don't usually get cod down here in Alderney, ( a bit like everywhere else by all accounts:)), but the mullet should be kicking in quite nicely at this time of year. Not everyone's cup of tea where eating is concerned, but they take some catching and put up a great fight on light tackle. I haven't been fishing for quite some time, so couldn't tell you what catches have been like. I shall have to get the mullet rod out and mix up some "shirvy" before too long.

When we want some serious Bass fshing the Manacles is the place to be, got to be out there before dawn really, catch some mackerel as the dawn breaks to use as live bait,
Especially good when the Gannets are feeding on Mackeral as well, then you know the bass are under them driving the up to the surface, you can actually see the oil on the surface coming from the Mackeral as the bass feed on them, mind you it is getting to be a rarer sight these days !.. Plus its not a place for the faint hearted, quite a sight to see what the reef looks like under the boat on a good sounder, cathedrals don't come into it !....
Can have good catches early morning/evenings drifting with Prawn on light lines in the Carrick Roads, mainly School Bass, one to three pound stuff mainly, but good sport on light tackle !

Thanks David for that, every time I go up im plagued with Whiting, Dont know what terminal tackle you use, but I stick to a Pennal rig 6/0 hooks, baited right up with whole Calimari stuffed with lug, dont get so many whiting on that, they still tear it to pieces though, still the commotion can attract the bigger stuff !..

Good web site , thanks

Hi Mike

Same tactics as you really, hoping the smaller fish biteing will pull in a larger ones ,pulley pennal 4/0 hooks 6 oz gripper with squid and lug whipped on, into a nice sausage ,I have also started using Ultrabite ,to early to say if its working yet but it does add that little confidence factor
