Winter boating in the UK

UK winter boating

We spent a Saturday evening anchored in the Beaulieu River about a month ago.

Untied the ropes and raced down Southampton Water, making it into the Beaulieu river in the dark (got away too late from work on Saturday afternoon), and then anchored in late evening mist.

Woke to a beautiful morning and were pleased that we had made the effort.

Been out of the water for bottom cleaning since. Just back in this week.

Given such short daylight hours and the chilly temps now, it's hard to summon the enthusiasm to cast off the pontoon.

However, New Year is the next target. Perhaps.

Cheers

Garold

Well Daka,

Thankfully Neptune was on my side at the weekend with the outdrives lasting long enough for us to get out :p

I wonder what the UK based Med boaters were up to this weekend?

If you look carefully you can see the NAB tower and West Pole to starboard

We were at Gun wharf at the weekend. That's where we were heading in the pics after spending a few hours in Chichester harbour. Almost stayed in the marina but as Gosport is free for us swung it in it's favour. I was in all bar one for a fair bit of Saturday afternoon.

We don't get away for weekend/week even in the Summer - too many other commitments! Thus as strictly 'day boaters', it's immaterial what time of year it is just need dry and relatively calm conditions... Due to work commitments and projects, Boxing Day is our next target! SWMBO's Mum is is a care home, so she'll visit on Xmas Day and if weather is good, we're going to aim for our Christmas dinner in the form of a turkey picnic in the middle or Torbay! (Hopefully Santa will deliver some thermals to counteract the 30kt wind-chill factor. :ambivalence:)

Dont know how I missed you , we arrived sat 1130 ish , daughter said it was too sloppy to stay so we left at dusk for Gosport K , left noon ish Sunday, Saturday was sunny but cold on the Flybridge , Sunday was duller but much warmer (for the time of year).

Loads of raggies out and about which the poll also shows.

We arrived mid afternoon on Sat and left around 11:30 Sunday morning. Was on H pontoon.

We've only been to Bembridge a couple of times this season so hoping to get there before the year is out.

We got out in the bay 2 Sundays ago and were buzzed by a pod of 10 or so Dolphins. One was swimming on his back within 2 feet of the swim deck "waving" his fins at us. They were with us for an hour and put on a show of jumping in ones and threes - an incredible sight and made winter boating (first time) for us worthwhile. Am trying to work out how to get an 80mb video onto the site - hence I have been quiet about it, but I guess I need to get to it now... Hoping to get out the weekend of the 7th and 8th as well...

What happened to your leg?

Cone clutch gave up, and didn't want to engage. It's been very quiet when engaging the forward gear on that drive for some time (several years), so I've sort of been expecting it.

A new cone and shoe was a bit over £300.

All back together now and relaunch tomorrow.

The old cone is now a paperweight, and lives on my desk alongside a gudgeon pin from a Volvo D16

Two weekends ago we had a nice weekend in Cowes, enjoyed the walking around, shopping and eating out etc and then a surperb cruise home Sunday at dusk in flat calm seas. We go out when ever the wind is reasonbly light and must have electric available which is not a problem around the Solent. Last year or maybe it was early this year we had a great weekend in Bembridge in light snow which I seem to remember well. The one thing I like about winter boating is the easy access to berths, which can be a challenge in the summer.
