I'm interested in buying a 2005 Ghibli which seems really well specc'd. It's had 5 owners since new, and has had a season in the Med apparently. Is it typical for these boats to change hands so often or is it a sign that all is not well? I'd appreciate your advice before going much further in the purchasing process.
 
I once looked at buying a Windy with a similarly large number of owners and I was told by the broker that Windys are like sports cars in that they tend to be bought by well heeled buyers who can afford to change their toys often. I dont know how true that is and having said that, 5 owners in 6 yrs sounds like an awful lot but you need to find out exactly who those owners were so ask to see the title documents (which you will need to get anyway if you buy). It may be that 1 or 2 of those owners might be dealers who simply bought/sold the boat or an owner might have transferred ownership between company and private or vice versa. What you need to know is how many user/owners the boat has had as opposed to owners. If the boat really has had 5 individual user/owners, then that would certainly ring a few alarm bells with me and it might be worth trying to contact some of those previous owners to find out about the history of the boat. Obviously, a high number of owners would make it even more imperative that you have a thorough hull/engine survey undertaken before you buy.
If the boat is not already being sold through the UK Windy dealer, Berthon http://www.berthon.co.uk/windy-boats/, then it would be worth contacting them to see if they know the history of the boat. Windys have never sold in large numbers in the UK due to their premium pricing so they may well know something.

Thanks for letting me know. I put in a couple of offers for the Ghibli I saw, both of which were rejected. I have subsequently looked at a couple of 31 Tornados which although a fair bit older, are much more affordable. Also the aft cabin and extra cockpit space make the Tornado more useable for the family. Decision time is approaching....

I had one. I can honestly say it is that rare boat that you regret selling it as soon as it is gone.
Actually I only had it one season or less, as it was a stop gap for me anyway until we found the right Khamsin.
Huge fun,very capable. No need for twins (in fact, dont), keep a nice spacious engine bay and the fuel and servicing down.
It is of course pretty small below, but we did manage three weeks on it on holiday, and storge obviously is an issue. The only pain is the full sized canvas which is a hassle putting up and down. I think I might have put a longer reply up a some years ago when someone else asked if you want to try a search.
V.popular Lymington/Poole area; you dont see that many outside there!

31Tornado is a different boat, though. It was actually what we first started looking at, but you need to be pretty specific in exactly what you want the boat to do.That rear area is either brilliant or a total waste of space. Some one on here bought one this summer, so again try a search and see if you can find him.

Thanks gjgm. The Ghibli for sale in Lymington is fab, but pricey at 98k. The rear space on the Tornado looks pretty versatile, but it's the appeal of the extra space below that makes the difference with 3 kids to fit in.

I've been and gone and done it.....
Lovely 31 Tornado, offer on which has been accepted. With a bit of luck I should have it well before Christmas. It's my first boat and I am very excited about getting to grips with it all. Top tips gratefully received, especially re good power boat instructor and winterisation. Pictures to follow after purchase completed.

One of the best views of the tornado is from the boat in front; that hull just seems to leap at you!
I think it will be a better boat with the kids; you are going to have alot of fun ;)
 
Survey tomorrow

Boat lifted today in preparation for survey and sea trial tomorrow. Another thread discussed osmosis issues with older Windys so not sure what to expect with the survey. A Volvo Penta engineer is going to accompany the surveyor to check out the donkeys and the drives so i hope ive got most of the bases covered.The thought of the commitment to boat ownership fills me with both unbridled excitement and acute anxiety about the seemingly limitless expense! The other half is being very supportive, but not using the money to update the kitchen is a small bone of contention. The link between boats and new kitchens seems to be a recurring theme in these fora, and I wonder how it is ever resolved....
