hi,
during the restoration of my old kestrel 22, i am faced with the prospect of completly replacing the centercase and the centerplate winding mechanism. does anyone know of a company in the uk who can supply a new winding mechanism for the center board on my wooden kestrel 22. the whole thing would possibly be some sort of ratcheted mechanism with an added safety feature of being able to lock it when fully retracted. has anyone any experience of replacing their own winding mechanism? all help and ideas would be gratefully received. cheers

When I built my trailer-sailer in the late seventies, I built my own centreplate winch to a design which I had been shown. It was a particularly safe winch,in that it could not run away and crack your knuckles with the handle. To unwind, the handle had to be pushed. This would release a clutch which allowed the drum to turn. As soon as the drum caught up with the handle, it all tightened up again until the handle was pushed again. When winding up, the whole thing locked up solid and turned as a single unit. The centreplate was 300 lb of inch-thick galvanised steel. I've written it up, and will send it to CB.
Peter.

When I had my E-Boat it had a rather ugly looking 'Jockey winch' mounted fore and aft across the deckhead in the fore cabin for keelhauling.

One of the first things I did was the take this out and replace it with a trailer winch which was much neater....However bloody dangerous as it could fly off the handle and do serious injury.

I soon reverted back to the original Jockey system which was very easy and simple even if it did look a bit strange.

I think these things are still available and a simple solution.

I used a trailer winch when building my Wee Seal but this one has a worm drive which prevents any chance of a runaway and makes it emminently controllable. It was supplied by Moray McPhail at Classic Marine who uses one on his own boat. Not a pretty sight but suitably encased its a case of what the eye doesn't see............

My 22 foot Anderson has a mechanical winch which hauls the keel weighing about 900lb up with a 6 mm galv wire rope and pulleys.

The make is" Dutton Lainson"My one is a "B1200B"They are made in USA but available in UK.

Dont use an ordinary trailer winch as it doesnt have a safety brake ie if you let go the handle the handle will spin faster and faster until the keel crashes fully down.

With a braked winch you have to wind it down as well as up and it will remain in any position inbetween.

Have a look here Im sure their sales office would email you the name of a UK supplier .
