I have had a few Windex units and have found them pretty fragile. UV seems to see them off in no time.

A stainless steel one from Compass has lasted well but is heavy and very crude - needs a force 4 to get moving.

Are the Hawk and Great Hawk any better?

I have a Hawk ( Great Hawk I think) I have had it for quite some considerable time ( 30 years maybe)

Yes I'd say it was fragile (a small bit of the tail fin has broken off) but I have never had a Windex so cannot compare

I dont leave it up during the winter. Always removed and stowed safely below.

I got into making my own. You need a stainless steel mast about 3mm diameter. Some carbon fibre or fibreglass and resin. Polyester is best.
Make a typical aeroplane fuselage profile type shape with large fin. (As big as you like) Additional layers on the narrow body. Fit a piece of brass or SS tubing vertically into the body with GRP either side. Fit a piece of lead on the nose to ensure closest ballance. Use pigment in the resin or paint it.
The body with bit of tubing slides over the mast. Before youy fit it get a piece of tubing with 2 screw set into the sides froma piece of chocolate block wiring connector. This clamps onto the mast to take down load. Fit another above the pointer to keep it on. Not guide markers but I don't think they matter.
