I haven't been to the boat for the past five weeks because of illness and other reasons, so yesterday, lovely morning, thought I'd take her for a blast to Yarmouth and back. Fat chance!! Although engines ran sweetly last time out, yesterday neither engine wanted to know. I sprayed WD40 in all the right places and after a short while port engine fired up and ran perfectly, but starboard engine just dug in and didn't want to play at all. Eventually started and ran for about 30 seconds then died - 20 mins later started again and ran for 30 seconds and died again. Being totally ignorant as far as mechanical things are concerned I shall have to get the man out, but why do engines have to play up when the last time they were used they were fine! (Another nice day today and I can't go anywhere!!).

I think it is not an option to "know nothing" about the mechanicals. I wd book yourself in for a course OR ask the man to stay a bit longer and and show you how to keep up with things, or praps even both. Bit of a weird duty cycle for an engine to do nothing but a couple of blasts once a month really.

I agree with tcm. I found some time to be with an engineer, a dictaphone and MY engines. In an hour I had covered all the emergency repairs that one would be expected to do out at sea and using my boat and engines. It ment more to me than any RYA Course could.
Best £30 I ever spent!

Because its a petrol innit!

Needs to be a lot of condensation to cause this surely. Foreign substance in fuel.Water perhaps.Do both engines run from single supply tank.Check fuel filters, but first check/drain carb bowls.Maybe try to get sample of fuel from bottom of tank.
