Why do you wave to passing boats?

Re: Your showing your age Andrew

No, I think if bikers are the equivalent of raggies then open-top sports car owners are the equivalent of stinkies. They too love the open air, the feel of the wind on their face etc. but they can't be faffed with getting all togged up in special gear and learning to handle a difficult and idiosyncratic machine, when they can just step into a car that handles just like their week-day one, wearing a T-shirt. And trousers, usually.

Sod off, my boat is

not any better than any other boat. They all float (most of the time) they all give pleasure to their owners however big however small. Plus I don't care who rafts along side, motor or sail even etaps, I enjoy a chin wag to pass away the time of day. Nope you don't have to dop your cap to me I'm no better/worse than any other boat owner.

Re: Sod off, my boat is

What kind of a liberal pinko attitude is that? I draw your attention to page 84 Nauticat Owners Manual - " Conduct to others" - subsection 4 para. 7 "A scowl is recommended when other boats attempt to raft alongside, particularly when thay have children or animals. Remember everyone else is aspiring to become a Nauticat owner, so have pride in your craft and yourself for having the means, integrity to have become an owner....." I suggest you give the manual a good read before you get yourself into trouble with the NTEOA.

Re: Sod off, my boat is smelly

Whenever I see a wave, for some strange reason I seem to interpret this less as a beckoning call, and more of a "F#ck off .. whilst I get my nosegay!" Particularly after a couple of days on the boat .. is this a mindset problem?

Re: Sod off, my boat is

I've just scanned my manuals all three of um, one is in Finnish a lot of good that is. I can't find any reference to NTEOA. Would being on the wrong side of NTEOA be worse than being on the wrong side of swmbo?

Re: Sod off, my boat is

Oh yes - I heard of someone who was downgraded to a thirty three by the NTEOA - then came under the auspices of the NTTOA who are a prickly bunch altogether - that 5 ft they lack doesn't sit well with them and they'd treat you like a pariah

Re: Sod off, my boat is

I rember you once confessed to me in a moment of weakness, you used to have Nauticat 441, but after buying a geordie a pint you were drummed out and the Nauticat replaced by Caprice(19) .. and you've been slowly battling your way back since?

On sunday sailing slowly up Soton Water we were cut up by a 40 foot yacht motoring with .. guess .. a blue ensign ... never a wave or acknowledgement in sight .. ignorant tossers .. guess the name said it all "Grumpy ....."

Your memory is the pits it was a Corrrrrrrrrrrrrribbbbbbbeeeee.
Did you watch the 'Bee in your Bonnet' program last night on the proposed no take zone in Lamlash bay? Lovely photography and a grand shot from a helicopter of what I think was Glen Rosa.

Re: Sod off, my boat is

That's a shame, I did'nt know it was on. Glen Rosa is the glen to the west of Goatfell and runs up to Chir Mhor ... probably one of the most beautiful mountains I've ever seen .. when it was visible.

Re: Sod off, my boat is

It was an interesting programme where a group of people wanted to put an end to shelfishing and they filmed the damage being done by the rakes - I don't think they'll win it - the conservation lobby is seldom as strong as the commercial one, don't you think?

Re: Sod off, my boat is

dunno
if you look at the no take area it was a tiny fraction
and looking at the damage being done by the scallop boats it seems hard to condone the protracted use

then again out of sight out of mind
if it was the cullens they were doing that too there would be uproar
but jobs win more sympathy than a few invertabrates and shellfish on a sea bed

Re: I can\'t argue with that

We still wave to each other down in the westcountry where the grockles/emits havent quite overwhelmed us. This is especialy done when somebody reverses up or pulls in for you in a narrow back lane.
ps Volvo drivers tend to wave/give way to one another.

Re: Sod off anyway

I agree. Sometimes, the waving is right pain in the bum.

I will admit to occassionally (well, always) waving at a large ferryboat with onlookers on deck and shouting "Hello, Poor People!" and they all wave back. I don't think they can hear tho....

Car-wise, you would wave or acknowledge another car IF it was dodgy like an old series 1 jag XJ6 or something without electric windows, or windows. However, if it's newish car, especially german, then you should neither give nor expect any such deference.
