Infact why do I wave to passing boats? When I'm driving my car I don't wave to other drivers and they don't wave to me. Is it because all boat owners must be idiots paying so much for a hole in the water and they sympathise for other likewise idiots?

Yachtsmen joined by the common bond of shared experience.
Long may it continue. Beautiful scenery is fine and so are beautiful boats - but its people that matter.

I can\'t argue with that

I must agree with you 100%. But why? who started it?.... The same people that wave to me wouldn't look twice at me in the yachtclub car park.

Hard to credit now, but there was a time when car owners waved to one another. If you saw the same type of car in particular. I remember this back in the '50s. Women drivers (rare) would always wave to one another.

Like all such courtesies, it was killed off by overcrowding. That's why waving at boats is falling out of fashion.

They are probably awestruck David.
You are retired which means you've sailed forever and there's nothing you don't know.
You are also extremely wealthy as you own a Nauticat and not just a piddly 33 but the full side of beef.
the 38 is a monster of a boat - a veritable Britannia - therefore added together - awestruck and so by definition -'umble.
I think you should develop your wave a little to bring in a sort of ' Royal' element - you owe it to your public.

Re: I can\'t argue with that

When I am driving my Morris Minor other Minor drivers always wave and this often also happens when I drive Joanne's new Mini so its just not boat folk who enjoy a good wave....

I wave at other boats but they don't always wave back........I wonder why...???

Buy yourself a VW Camper, a Series IIa landrover or a minivan - you'll get plenty of waves

Re: I can\'t argue with that

About six or seven years ago, I owned one or two MG cars (three actually), and one always got a wave from another MG driver. Regarding of waving while sailing, at least you know that the other yachtie has actually seen you if he responds to your wave. Anyway, it is nice and friendly; we hear enough about boat rage, so accept this custom as one of life's few remaining courtesies.

Yes but

(accept this custom as one of life's few remaining courtesies)

I'm courtious in a supermarket or try to be, but I don't wave to all insundry who push pass me with their trolly do I? In fact I'm usually ready to blow a gasket trying to get past trollies abandond while the owner/pusher*** is blocking the isle too busy yapping to someone.

*** Usually two old women :)

Then there\'s the exquisite moment...

Then there's the exquisite moment when you haven't waved, and they haven't waved, and then - at the very, very last moment - you wave and they have to return it! Timing, as in all things, is surely crucial.

Our other expensive obsession is motorcaravanning and there is a waving phenomenon amongst this particular community, too.

Anyone who really enjoys waving at other travellers should visit Islay in the Inner Hebrides - all the local vehicle drivers wave at the tourists and at one another!

It's friendly

Re: It\'s dying out in the Solent

You've got to keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.

Anyway not so many folks wave back. The racers never did, well apart from "the international get out of my way gestures". The charterers either do it to much or not at all, I suppose they're busy reading manuals or something. Commercial boaters just look at you but there is a recent trend for powerboaters to wave. Just before their wash shortens your spine. Still proves they saw you.

Re: Your showing your age Andrew

Or get a motorbike, most wave at each other although they tend to be nods, rather than waves, or else they can become weaves.

There is actually a whole subculture of who will wave to whom, which I think has an analogy with boats:
Race replicas in matching leathers (racing yachts and dinghies) never wave - it's un-macho. They'd also fall off if they lost concentration at that speed (the bikes, that is). Their girlfriend pillions (weekend weather-rail fodder) often do wave, however.
Elderly folk on scooters (anglers in a dinghy with a cuddy) rarely wave, they don't see themselves as bikers (yotties).
Bikers and sports car owners (sail and power) only wave to the same species. (Cross-species waving at sea is probably more common, due to meeting people on scuttlebutt and finding out they are human after all).

We wave 'cause everyone else does and wouldn't like to think that we were unsociable. Also like to wave when sailing faster and closer to the wind than others!

Anther reason is; if we hit trouble a few hundred yards further on he won't think 'not going back to help that miserable so and so' - which is of course a thought that we would never have, of course:))

(having said that, only wave at stinkies who pass at least 200metres away whilst exceeding 5knts)

So right about the bike subcultures! Pillions also wave(nod) at other pillions. BTW are Volvo drivers the bikers version of the stinkpot?

Ruth

PS Saab drivers used to wave at each other too.

Re: Stinkies Waving

This leads to one really important ettiquette question.
On principle, we only wave to other raggies, but occasionally - horror of horrors - a stinkie waves at us. Are we supposed to wave back?
