After a weekend racing in the pouring rain and coming ashore thoroughly wet and miserable we were back for more the next week. That time the weather was fine, the boat went well and we came ashore wet and happy.
Then you add up how much the pride and joy costs to run each year, divide by the number of times you use it and then you wonder, why do I do this?
So the question is why do we do it? Is it for those few days a year when everything is perfect and we forget bashing to windward in the hail and a F6? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

1. I sail, but I don't understand why people race.
2. NEVER add up how much it all costs.
3. It's much better than golf or fishing.
4. It's an addiction, once hooked, you can almost never quit.

Why do we do it???? 'cos we are fortunately to be able to afford it . Count your blessings mate !!

I think that must be it. The mistake I made was adding up the costs. I knew at the time I shouldn't.
One born every minute.

If I were you I wouldnt do it!

But I am me and I enjoy it...just sailing /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I race and cruise in fairly equal measure, and I can't understand why anyone wouldn't want to do both! Racing keeps sailing interesting when the weather's a bit crap.

However, a wise man once said - cruise your own boat, race someone elses!

I have always enjoyed both racing and cruising, although there was a time when pretty much all I did was race. I realised one day, when approaching a weather mark, that when I was sailing that was all I though about. Not work, but sailing. When I was ashore, even if I was "relaxing", my mind would often turn to what was sometimes a very stressful job. But not while sailing.

That's still the case. When the boat is underway, I can leave the rest of the world behind. And that is a good thing.

1. I like making things. Sailing gives me lots of things to make and repair, and a reason for doing so.

2. It's much better brain food than chess or soduku.

3. Life means a lot more when you are reminded how fragile it is.

4. I like travelling. There is no better way of arriving at another place than by water. The accommodation may not be cheap, but you can be certain of a good view.

5. It's a refuge - my boat is the equivalent of my shed at the bottom of the garden, but there's no danger of better half visiting (even with a brace and bit, because she'd have to cross water to reach her).

6. Part of me is a rat. Sailing feeds the rat.

All of the above.
