Why are these sytems not more popular? (long post)

Southern Sails are no more, the y moved to boscombe but the customners didn't go with them.

Last I saw the proprietor was working for Quay Sails in Poole.

Which means of course I have to get the yankee off and send it away to be copied, bogger!!! ( I wonder what happened to the records?) It's quite a complicated one, triple something or other.
Getting more expensive everytime I think about it!!
Any cheap/good sailmakers in Greece??

You have to change your approach. As you say, sailing with jib only is not an option because the rig will weathercock. The correct technique is to furl the jib as the first sail reduction before starting to reef the main. In strong winds a deep-reefed main works very well. Remember that you can de-power on any point of sailing by letting go the sheet because there are no shrouds to limit the travel of the boom.

So what are the storm canvas options? Presumably a storm jib is out, so a trysail?

It's often thought that a storm jib only is better than a trysail only for heavy weather work, both for balance problems and due to not wanting to use a boom that could get rolled into the sea and damaged. So is that a weakness of the system?

It doesn't appeal to me, primarily due to the inflexibility that seems to be in the system.

For example, it occurs to me if anything happened to render the main un-usable - track damage, sail damage etc, then you lose all ability to sail, as you cannot set just a jib.

That I can't answer as it isn't a question on my rig. I imagine you could set a trysail using parrels. The early models had a pole mast but the last versions had an aerofoil section which would provide some drive.

My mast is a 10 sq m aerofoil and works fine on its own - 9 knots achieved on one occasion.

It is in fact possible to set the jib on its own if needs must - by running the sheet to the front of the boom instead of the back.
