Why are the heads...

Aft anchor ... How to do it like an Arab...

Scenario... you come into a quiet spot and decide to put the nose of the boat ashore and pass a tide or two.
Fine. Secure bowline to shore... but how to stop your arse wagging about? and indeed prevent whole show being washed in and out on the tide?

Better ideas than a small anchor and lots of chain in aft locker welcome!

Further... two anchors allow you to orientate your boat as required at anchor.

yes, fine, but a) that's not really "anchoring" is it, its mooring and b) can be just as easily achieved with a bow anchor and a line ashore from the stern.
A kedge is sometimes useful but is no substitute for the real anchor up front which you need to actually "anchor" the boat.

Thanks for the clarification ... so anchoring with one rode is proper anchoring, but two make it mooring?
Ok. gottit.

So... should I throw away the extra chain and anchor?
Oh, how did you manage to wind up arse on to the shore? My motor has no reverse, so...

Actually... yes ... what you're saying would work. My way seems easier tho!

Exactly. Which is also why the Captain’s cabin is right aft...

Arab shows are fore and aft rigged and are usually reaching...

I notice HMS Victory has heads as expected at the bow, and as said with wind aft, or not more than a little forward of the beam, this is the best place.
But Nelsons Cabin in the stern has its own private head (tail?).
I guess the crew would at least have the advantage of knowing their commanders state of health...

Yes, I believe that is the difference between the two. Secured by the bow (or stern) to an anchor is anchoring, tied up fore and aft or to a permanent facility (ie a mooring bouy) is mooring. Am I mistaken?
How do I manage to wind up arse to the shore? I'd use the rudder.
Bow anchor and stern line ashore is how almost everyone does it in the med - at least in the E med. (harbours excepted)

I just learned there's a young persons' popular music combo by the name of "Shy Talk".

I remember, that's what my parents used to call visiting seagulls, when we lived by the sea long ago.

The names of racehorses is carefully vetted by the Jockey Club, but inevitably some naughty ones get through. One such was "Shy Talk", which appeared in a televised meeting. Peter O'Sullivan's diction as the horse was lead through the saddling enclosure was impeccably careful, but you got the impression he was praying it wasn't amongst the leaders as the pace of commentary quickened in the final furlong. Inevitably, it was...

Then there's the commentator's curse of a professional motorcycle racer named Mike Hunt.
