Why are motorboaters generally nicer than people who sail?

None of that French slang in the bar, you'll get ducked in the fountain.

;)

Not quite sure what to think.
I grew up in the old world order on a farm, but there's been a social revolution; and we now live the age of the common man.
The real truth is older people are caught between two conflicting social systems, the traditional and the modern.
You pays your money and.....:rolleyes:

But what does cut across the social divide is that a true gentleman can communicate with all type of people,whether prince or pauper.

..and that's something the Dragons [BBC2] can't do, a perfect example of self obsessed self made spivs.

Have been following this thread and thinking of adding my own experience and predudices to the original subject, but I think the above sums it up neatly, just change the divide to mobos/raggies or whatever the true enthusiast just loves boats and would gladly go out in any type to suit the mood and conditions.

Great photo, love it!
I'm a bit late to this class-war thread, sorry - but just to pick up on this one point: the most upmarket marina in the south of France is the IYCA in Antibes. That small boat in the gap is a Mangusta 92, iirc. Good luck hitting your neighbours deck from there :D

Great thread;) with loads of great comments, had fun reading the replies!

One more thing, it is funny that for example in Finland some boaters don't wave back when greeting each other from motor to sail or vice versa when at sea.. So I do still think a lot of sailing folks are a bit snotty, like I said, love sailing but based on my life experience prefer talking to people who do motorboating as they often have a better sense of humour than the good old boys at the sailing yacht club ..

Now, don't not get all hot under the red neckerchief, but

No one has reported the clear difference in dress codes twixt raggies and mobos;

Waggle in Solent=
Breton kep and wed trizers, if over 50, baseball kep, wed shorts and Dabawwys if under 50, esp if wacer or prof yottie, Wuggah style boat shirt( all matching if wacing Cwew).
Pwefaded wed Musto Snug, dark sunnies on top of kep or hair if gel.
Hi tech wacing deckies may also be worn by non Afterguard members.
Freeze dried food on board, or usual table for 12 at the Island or Saffron.

Mobo in Solent;
immaculate white ducks(chep) or slacks(gel), short sleeved Polo Team shirt/silk blouse, Dubawwys for him and her in pale colours. Gucci handbags for him and her to preserve trizers line. Whisks off to 5star eatery for all meals.

Raggie on East Coast;
Him; navy blue coveralls( spotlessly clean if RHYC, Burnham, or other Woyal Club), She may wear paler blue coveralls, home tailored to fit. Viyella shirts for both( Charles Stock approved) and Damart thermals.

Fife Country thermal slippers in the cabin, outside, Mud covered black or green safety wellies (Hunters if RHYC etc, etc). Cloth caps or varnished bowlers in summer, ex-Antarctic Survey hoods in winter. Tattoos and shaven heads optional.

She will be carrying a 56 lb bag of coal for the stove, he the sand and cement for a little light hull maintainance.
FB pies and tea on mooring, or pint and a pie at the Pin if wedding anniversary.

Mobo on East Coast;
All as above plus tattoos and shaven head, bare chested 24/7/365 compulsory with display of builders cleavage in summer. Romford Navy T shirt optional unless Jetskier.

Down West:
Raggies and Mobo alike swathed in smocks, trendy and racing types in Treago Mills finest workwear/ offers. Paraffin lamps and GPS jammers kept handy after dark to lure Solent Yotties ashore.
Anything vittles on the boat other than local pasties and local cider or beer results in being branded an Incomer for life, or worse.

Welsh, Scots and Irish raggies and Mobos in their normal outdoor clothing, which has to be pretty wind and rainproof anyway.

Think that's about it, I could do the Europeans as well, but......much as WS&I boaters, except Dutch boats full of bikes for the dykes.

After all, we are all Boaters, and enjoy what we do.:encouragement:

Mobo in Solent:

Oh Dear, I'm really not getting that right at all.
Do M&S shorts with a vague aroma of diesel and a T-shirt with holes in, count?

Your Solent Mobo Paid Hand will really have to smarten himself up.
I recommend a pair of white coveralls for him, the cost of which you can stop from his bag of coal at Christmas.

Oh, One Sees, YOU are wearing these. Well it' s ok until the express dry cleaners bring all your things back, I suppose, but then you must give back the clothes you borrowed from the Raggie Liveaboard berthed next door.:D
