Who looks after / maintains the bouys in Pyefleet creek?

I think some may private and some are the Colchester Oyster Fishery - I emphasise 'think'. The Fishery as a retail operation (they serve many of the finest restaurants) is closed.

There. Colin is quicker than me. Incidently, the Fishery has great stuff. We got a ton of lobster and huge prawn for our 50yr anniversary bash last summer.

That's interesting. Two of us rafted up on a vacant mooring towards the end of last season. Sitting below enjoying a drink we were disturbed by a knock on the hull and a "hello." We were charged £5 each for the night. We never gave it a thought, but very fair. Although there was two of us on the mooring, they still charged the advertised £10 a night for the mooring.

There used to be guy in West Mersea that went around collecting mooring fees from any visitor that moored up, even though he had nothing to do with the moorings

Just wondering if the mooring buoys are marked with regard to
overnight charges. I'm still a bit confused on picking up buoys in both
East and West Mersea.

East Mersea - In previous years the Oyster Fishery have collected mooring fees BUT it is also said that a 'couple of guys' have collected the fees. Having been to the Oyster Fishery place to buy lobsters etc, I would be surprised if they didn't have proper receipts. They are a very professional international operation

West Mersea - the WM YC launchmen collect mooring fees for West Mersea irrespective of whether it is a YC mooring or one of the Yards' moorings or a private mooring. The fees are collected to benefit the 'Committee', not the mooring owners. The 'Committee' pay for the navaids. The club launch gives you a proper receipt and if you drink/eat in the Club you get a quid pro quo (I can't remember what you actually get because obviously I never get a quid pro quo). The Club is of course closed at the moment and the launch service is greatly restricted and therefore don't ferry visitors at the moment.

Thanks for that.

Had a couple of happy seasons berthed in West Mersea until I moved house.

I seem to remember that some yachtsmen rather abused the free nature of the moorings which led to overnight charges. I would think that the vast majority of visitors are happy to pay. Particularly, as mentioned , monies go to a worthwhile cause.

I understand the cost of the navaids was the principal, if not the only motive. Trinity House stepped up their insistance on standards - which of course will have been driven by Helf (sic) and Safety. There is absolutely no source of income to pay for the navaids.

We moored there last year and no one was about to ask for money. My chum , being a very honourable chap, rang the Oyster people the following day and paid. To say they were suprised would be an understatement! And there was a tag on the mooring.

I work at the Colchester Oyster Fishery and the moorings are ours, vacant moorings are charged at £10 per night. We would appreciate it if you do pick up a mooring you call us on 01206 384141 to pay for your stay as we are short staffed at the moment, this also avoids you being woken up by the oyster team knocking on your hull in the early hours when they are off dredging.

We are still open but aren't allowing anyone to visit the Fishery, because of the current lockdown. Should you want to enjoy some of the best seafood on your boat including oysters from river below you, you can have it delivered to your home on Thursdays or Fridays and take it to the boat with you. See www.colchesteroysterfishery.com for more information.
