Whitworth or imperial

When I was in my early teen spannering days with my Dad, he used to refer to spanners as either being Whitworth, AF or metric. So my Dad would say, please pass me the 1/2 inch AF to distinguish it from the 1/2 inch Whitworth. Metric stood as a separate new fangled concept and would simply be referred to as 13mm. :)

I know just what you mean, and I think of my spanners as ""Whitworth", "AF" or "Metric" too, Mind you, I recently bought some UNF bolts for the Herald and found that they had metric heads. Bastardised (is that OK, mods?) things.

That's an interesting point JD.

I guess that times have changed in the last 50 years. :ambivalence:

Richard

1/2 inch AF would be for a 5/16 inch UNC/F the closest metric is M8 which has a spanner A/F of 13 mm. of cause 1/2 inch is 12.7 mm

Whitworth is different altogether and the size of the spanner jaws is not relevant as all my whitworth spanners are marked with the bolt size.
