White smoke KAMD300, normal?

This is a photo of my exhaust elbow (KAMD44) , 4 out of 10 holes blocked . this was causing slightly less steam at 3300 rpm with no overheat . Cleaned out elbow and coolers to check for any more rubbish ( all clear ) . steam now gone and temp down by 2 degrees . As a simple check the rubber exhaust pipe was definitely hotter to touch than starboard exhaust .

Good stuff everyone, its steam then. We have not opened up the intercooler yet but that will be our next move and if that don't sort it we will get at the exhaust elbow per ANDY59 suggestion.

+1 on the exhaust elbow, if the rest of the engine is running at correct temps the problem is probably in the elbow - and as Divemaster says - much easier to do. Sometimes the rubber exhaust hose sticks to the paint on the elbow so have a long thin screwdriver to hand that you can push inbetween the elbow and rubber hose to break the seal.

Ok, you win. I don't think the intercooler is difficult but agree the elbow is easier and come to think of it it looks like the previous owner have been messing around with the rubber so maybe its happened before.

With all this about the elbow I decided to check one of my own, I've had 2-5 degree up in temp on one of my KAD43's for a few years and recently there has been a "rust" drip on the grp in back of the engine room. I got it all off in like 20 mins and to my surprise there was a crack in that thing, wonder how that came about?

And it was kinda messed up with rust and whatever, this is after a bit of cleaning and then realizing there is no point fixing it because of the crack so have now ordered a new one at around £250.

Dear Sir, I have the same problem on my Merry Fisher 925 with Volvo KAMD300. White smoke as steam and soot film on stern after runing on 2900 rmp for few hours.
Did you solv your problem an how?
Thanks

White smoke as steam - check out your cooling system thoroughly. Take the exhaust elbow off and see what's happening there. If the engine temps are OK (check with an infra red thermometer at the thermostat housing), then there is enough water going through the engine to keep it cool, but not enough to cool the exhaust components properly.

some engines/boats get sooty sterns and there can be nothing much wrong, its an aerodynamic thing. My KAMDs used to give a sooty stern but I now use Fuelset diesel treatment and the exhaust is much cleaner and no soot at all.

In the end and after checking the exhaust elbow (which was ok btw) we had a professional do a full seawater system clean which made it much better but not completely gone.

I did cleaning of heat exchanger and checked pipes, replaced sea water impeler pump with new one(talked with Volvo specialist at Duseldorf boat show who told me to do so.), cleaned after cooler, replaced both termostats, serviced all six diesel injectors, checked exaust elbow......and still having steam.
Temperature on termostats housing at 2900 rpm is 92-93'C,at 1000 rpm is 84'C and at 600rpm is 82'C.
On exaust elbow is 70'C,turbo 92'C,heat exchanger from 92' to 75'C(at the backside),on exaust chamber 72'C and exaust pipes 60'C.
Water at exaust on stern is over 60'C and is black(I colected in a basket).
Any ideas?

If the water is black something else is going on and the white smoke don't need to be steam, it can be diesel that is not burning correctly. Have you checked the fuel filters and done a compression test? If its steam you may still have a minor blockage/build up of crap elsewhere in the system.

Yes, your engine is far too hot everywhere you measured. There are four heat exchangers and a lot of pipe work on a KAMD. You need to strip and clean all off them.
You should measure about 80 degs on the thermostat housing. Turbo should be similar. Exhaust elbow should be 50 to 55 degs.

Your engine is borderline overheating and probably getting tight. So engine having to work too hard so black exhaust, steam, everything. I would not go over 1000rpm until it’s really sorted.

Hi there, I have cleaned all 4 heat exchangers and found a dirt and rust on oil cooler.......did also turbo service and cleaning. Changed all filters, impeler, oil,,but still having steam on exaust and temperature raising at full throtel....and water coming through expansion water tank filler cap.
Do you know what it shoul be?
Thanks
