Funnily enough Seanick, I was thinking down the same line. . .I am going to use a penetrating epoxy on the original ply and repair a few nicks. . . .so why not carry on with paint? The texture of the canvas is not visible in any case. It's all new to me this, and I don't want to have to go back and redo things. . .but could be you are right. . .canvas was fine in service in 1953.
thanks. . . .Erik
If your cabin roof is ply, and it is not a major traffic area, you could epoxy coat, 2 coats, then SP Hi-build 302, the either 2 pack paint with sand, or deck paint. Ideally one would include a layer of glass cloth around the 200 gram/sq m weight. This would give added durability to the coating, and should last 'indefinately'.
You can make "smudge" for applying below canvas by adding linseed oil putty to conventional enamel paint or speak with the likes of Teamac or Flag Paints as they still might have a ready made product in their range.
