Which trailer sailer!

Simon,

try to leave the insults aside.

My chum who got the helicopter ride was Chief Designer on the Fairey Delta 2 world speed record aircraft, also the transatlatic race and Falklands War winning Harrier and later the export success Hawk so was hardly a cretin.

I have to say I rather doubt your claims re stoney bits at East Head - I've only sailed there since 1970 - and being able to back off if aground in 1' depth

Andy

Ok, not a cretin, he just forgot he couldn't walk on water. Easy done.

Ok, it drew a foot, but it didn't float in a foot. I should have known that.

Ok, when afloat (which was in a foot, even though I just said it wasn't) it couldn't move. Which makes me wonder why I tie my boat up.

Ok, there are no stoney bits at East Head. I scatter the pebbles when I arrive and collect them when I leave.

Hi Simon,

I'm sure you and your boat are perfectly pleasant, if slightly confused.

See you on the water next season; I've had enough of this thread.

Andy

Angus,

Then again I'd say drying any boat out on hard sand is cruel, it would punch a twin keelers' bilges through or tip a wing keeler right over; so in my humble estimation, avoid sand moorings !

Strange then, that Southerly shot many of their publicity pix with their various boats aground and dried on the sand at East Head. They avoided the stony bit, obviously.

putting crew ashore ' calf deep ' doesn't work in soft mud, as discovered by a chum who ended up getting a CG helicopter ride !

I bet he wasnt wearing pink wellies with straps on then?

Made me wonder what the story was spotted in deep mud at Conway last weekend

You've left quite a few of your stones behind, could you collect them all up the next time you visit please?

You have to understand that it's difficult. They are impossible to see once there's a foot or so of water over them, and the water comes back in before I have time to collect them all.

Look, here's an example. Below the water in this photo is something much bigger than a pebble, part of an anchor and a chain in fact, in a foot or so of water and completely impossible to see.

For interest, this photo illustrates the approximate depth of the water.

So bringing the thread back on topic - i.e. trailer sailers which can dry out, and can be towed by a large family car (Passat, big Volvo, 5 Series etc). I'd like to extol the virtues of the Red Fox for the following reasons...
a) in OP's budget
b) family friendly (including enclosed heads)
c) will dry upright due to flat bottom
d) absolutely no incursion of keel case into cabin. I admit there is a small loss on either side of the cabin for the lifting keels.
e) better PY displacement speed than an Anderson 22
f) 8m mast can be easily raised using the winch on the trailer or a handy billy. Rigging the boat takes about 2 hours or so.
g) floats in about 40 cm of water (with keels and rudder raised)
h) active and friendly owners' association
i) fun to sail, with option for symmetric / asymmetric if the OP likes kites, or can be easily single handed due to small jib and all controls accessible from the helm

I admit I wouldn't want to bash into a F11 headwind in mine, but with a 10 & 13 year old on board, I don't think I would want to go out in a F11 in a Vancouver, Fisher, Nauticat, Barbican or any other heavy displacement boat etc.

Glad you havent lost the will to live! I nearly did!

You have just mentioned something exciting to sail and Macgreggor in the same post..... Trolling?

You have you lost the Plot Man.... unless you want to teach the girls how to waterski! I bought a rib for that much cheaper to run than a 26 foot motorsailer with 50 hp on the back....

But I bow to the many Mac owners out there who enjoy what it offers, Compromised mobo or compromised saily boat but will do everything you may want and plenty around at your budget levels!

Your reasons for purchase and sailing background are very similar to ours. I still get a thrill when our boat lifts on a wave and surfs downwind just like a Merlin. Used to have a Scorpion Built by John Turner of Merlin fame also.

I was being sarcastic on the McGregor! Sorry if you missed that one! Heading out over the week end to view a couple of possibilities!

I wad serious don't knock them till you have tried one.It might tick all the boxes apart from....

Do let us know how your browsing goes.

They also have quite sprightly performance, as I recall.

Pretty reasonable performance, although they're not great in light airs. I'm sure that something like the Bene 21 or Sunfast 2000 would be quicker and would also fit into the OP's category, but I think the Red Fox makes a better cruiser. I did get 12knots SOG out of mine once, but it was with a favourable tide and an F8 behind me.

Like your beaching legs Simon ;)

Thank you. They are a fine pair, I chose them carefully. The Evo, unlike the Andyson, doesn't require them to dry out on sand without falling over. Not that one should ever dry out on sand of course, since doing so might cause ones flares to fall into ones porta potti.

TSB240,

quite correct.

The police have stated they will be targetting trailed boats " as they've had it easy for too long ".

For instance at the end of the M27 - between Hampshire and the West Country - trailed boats are sometimes diverted by 2 ' police interceptor ' cars ( apparently fancying themselves as Mad Max ) and directed to a weighbridge.

No matter that burglars and rapists stroll away, boat owners are an easy target...

You'd better PM Whitelighter with this info as he has expressed the opinion on a previous thread that these limits only apply to commercial towing.
