Which cooker would you buy?

Fitting a Spinflo even as we speak. Old ENO has its faults, no oven control being the main one, and we wanted a separate grill.

Hi all,

Word of warning about Smev.....they look nice but impossible to get spare parts.

My Smev 333 oven and grill wouldn't stay lit.....needs a new control unit........I've been trying for the last 3 months to get the part....Dometic (Smevs new agent) were hopeless.

So oven is now sitting proudly in the nearest skip!

Probably too late now, but may be of help to others.......Have you tried Leisure Spares 01423 321108 sales@leisurespares.co.uk ???

About a year ago they got some bits and pieces for our SMEV from the manufacturers in Italy in a few weeks. Not sure if they are still SMEV agents but possibly worth a try??

Had a Spinflo on the first boat. Now we have a Force 10. Both cook food, but the Force 10 is more robust, easier to clean, and better insulted IMHO.

Best part is the way the top just lifts up leaving an easy to wipe stainless surface, as opposed to having to pull out the pot supports from those fiddly holes.

As others have said it all depends............... we have a GN-Espace Levante LPG Marine Cooker-G1001. It was the shop display model so we got it cheaper, as they are expensive. It has four burners a grill and thermostat on the oven. As I love cooking and do a fair amount on board, Ian felt it was only fair to treat me to a decent cooker. Your SWMBO, or you, need to decide what you actually wants to do in terms of cooking. If you're into cooking on the boat then get something really decent.

Another vote for Spinflo. Replace my old Flavell in November and it has been fantastic. Can actually cook things now rather than just heating up!

The only thing on the oven that stops it from working is the thermo couple, if you have enough patience and know a good boiler spare shop you should be able to get a new one with ease,

I have the stainless SMEV 3 burner. 4 burner there just wasn't enough room for 4 pots , fiddles, handles and other bits.

Good quality cooker. works a treat ( had roast chicken cooked in it last trip ) Don't ask me why! A ready cooked chicken from the local supermarket deli would have been far simpler but a certain person had to prove it could be done!

When we bought our boat it had a Wallas diesel cooker (less than 2 years old). It was a complete nightmare. When it worked it took ages to go through electronic checks then heats up like an old electric cooker - half an hour to get a cup of tea! Both burners on and controlled together, one half the strength of the other, lots of juggling of pans needed. Regularly cut out or broke down - we once sent it back for repair at great expense. No grill. The oven was excellent. We persisted for 3 years, diesel being less dangerous than gas, but when the oven fan broke and we found out the cost of a new fan we decided we could no longer go on with the problems and expense.

Our replacement is a Nelson Spinflow - excellent grill compared with other boat cookers, excellent oven, and we even get a cup of tea quickly.

I don't know that specific cooker, but my understanding is that diesel cookers are designed to run continuously, like an Aga. Good for liveaboards in cold places, but not if you just want a cup of tea on a weekend day sail.
