Which conditions are the worst for sailing in

Over the last few years we have unwittingly found ourselves in various conditions we would prefer not to be in.

High winds, big sea swell, fog, squalls, strong currents, cold.

With the winds you reef, possibly change direction to make it more comfortable

Big swells are scary but after a while you realise the boat will bob around and does look after itself to a certain extent.

Fog.. with all the modern instruments and a good look out it is not a big a problem as it used to be.

Squalls.. often you can see them but occasionally you don't and they can cause real problems.. just don't like them at all and can be dangerous.

Strong currents... inshore can be a nightmare but to be honest you should be aware before going out and have worked them out.

Cold... the thing I hate the most. You can put everything on and still be cold and to me one of the most dangerous parts of sailing if you don't have any relief and cannot get warm.

Out of all these cold has been the worst for me.

What are your nightmare sailing conditions?

Really?

Easy in order of least to greatest severity.

Hot sunny wind calm or little wind and calm sea.

Hot sunny wind calm, Calm sea, ocean swell.

Pissing rain, calm wind, cam sea, ocean swell.

Pissing, rain, calm wind, calm sea, ocean swell and fog

What the heck it still beats motoring unless your fishing;)

A big swell closing your chosen port after a long pasge... You choose between running the bar and slogging on when tired...

Then you find utnyou are out of gin and tonic:D

What are your nightmare sailing conditions?

As what happened last season:

To believe the Met Office as relayed by the Coastguard because they were 180 out & what was supposed to be a 6 turned out to be an 8+, with a Crew member turned-in due to motion-sickness and my other Crew starting to display initial signs of Hypothermia, then explaining that he couldn't go below because he was recovering from a recent procedure and would rupture his internal sutures if he started to wretch. The squalls every ten-ish minutes were having the rigging resonate at various frequencies with the occasional wave joining us in the cabin below.
Don't know the wind speed as my head-unit had sustained damage from a neighbours halliard, and we had to 'get back' because both my Crew had work the next day.

Both my Crew are 'Old Salts' ... are still out on the water & one has recently bought his own Yacht! :)
