Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80's) ?

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

Hi kilkerr,
I'm looking for a cruiser/racer,
The Kingfisher was described in YM as pedestrian !
Thanks for the suggestion

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

Hi Tom,
I note your comments.
I have to be honest and do not particularly like the look of the Rival 32, however I do appreciate its heavy weather abilities. I do like the bigger 34 & 36's, though they are outside my budget right now. It will certainly be a boat that I would consider in a few years time.
I just want a boat that is able to do reasonably fast passages and one that I would enjoy sailing single handed, one that can be described as a cruiser/racer. I found the Monsun a superb seaboat and passage maker but a bit of a bore if I just wanted to pop down for an afternoons sail. I suppose I want my cake and to to eat it, I want a boat that is fun to sail if I want to thrash out to sea on my own but comfortable when the wife and kids are onboard.

Hi Yoda,
Thanks for the suggestion. A very unusual name and one I have not considered.
It's spec looks like a possible maybe, I'll try and find one to look at next week I'm home.

Hi Metabarca,
Thanks for the suggestion, at 5'10" draft a bit over my limit though what a beautiful boat. If I can'y find what I like within my own draft limit of 5' I may just have to compromise for this one !

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

How about a Centurion 32?

I'm biased (as I own one) - easily confused with a Contessa 32, but more spacious inside, probably nearly as quick on the water.

Vital stats:

LOA: 32'
LWL: ~24'6"
Beam: 9'10"
Draft: 5'10"
Designer: Holman & Pye, ~'68
Builder: Wauquiez
Built: ~380, 1968 to 1977

Not actually that common to see one for sale.

Regards, Jeff.

Maxi 95, 7 berths (just), strong and a delight to sail - not a lot of money. £20k will buy one that may need a bit of cosmetic tlc.

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

Dufour 29 - a bit more modern looking than some of the other alternatives (looks like the more plentifull Dufour 2800), but a foot or two bit longer. Comes in a shallow fin keel version 1.35 metre draught. nice interior, and looks like it would sail ok.

or have a look at an Achilles 9M - known as fast and seaworthy, I believe there may be a shoal fin version available too.

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

Hi,
Camper nicholson 38, draft 5'6, beam 10', super family boat, aft cabin, roomy saloon and galley, bit biased as I have one.
Long keel, great to sail loves the wind.
Its not mine but one for sale in the Yachting Monthly, (May)worth a look.
Hope you find and enjoy what you are looking for.
Mike.

Thank you

Thanks to everyone who read and replied to my post.
I have added a couple more to my short list.

I'll be taking a closer look at the Elizabethan range, an Albin Ballad and the Centurion 32.

If anyone is interested in buying a Hunter Delta 25 with lifting keel in super condition with inboard diesel and ready to sail away or just wants a sail in one give me a call.

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

Homa -- I have a Tyler Seacracker aka Trintella IIa. They are usually cheap enough for your price bracket. Draft 4 ft 7inches.
They are surprisingly fast - basically because of a slippery hull but they are very heavy. They do benefit from a folding prop. Accomodation varies with firt out but we have cruised with 4 adults comfortably.
They are very seakindly. We spent 5 hours with just the main (2 reefs) reaching up and down going nowhere of the Jade to avoid going up the Elbe when the tide was ebbing against a westerly F6. The boat and I loved it. We had a two metre cresting swell and were sailing up and down the furrows between the 10 metre mark and the big ship channel. The boat felt very safe - and we were doing 6 kts. Almost no water came on board. Main problem is limited storage as the hull is not voluminous

Hello Roger,
I have considered the Trintella, but to be honest I would prefer a cruiser/racer, something with a bit more light wind performance. In all other respects she fits the bill perfectly. I won't rule one out though until I've had a proper look over one.
It's going to be fun looking at boats again.

Re: Thank you

I carefully refrained from suggesting Albin Ballad, because it so perfectly fits the bill, but there are so few of them in the UK. If you do decide in favour, worth importing one of the many in Europe to increase the UK pool !

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

I had an Elizabethen 31 for around 10 years and found her to be a wonderful boat
tn_Lizelle_2.jpg
She was called Lizelle but the new owner renamed her White Heather as you can see. (well almost see!)

she really taught me how to sail and looked after me. I used to single hand her most of the time and was able to get her on and of the trots - pile moorings on the Hamble really easily - going astern into a marina berth was a bit of a no no. Good boat to be in when it got windy.
Slight lack of stowage space or maybe I am just spoiled by the 40 ft steel boat I had followed by a Moody 36.
I decided on an Elizabethen because they were lell well known than other very famous long keel designs and much less money but as good as any 31footer -

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

I am looking at an Elizabethan 30. weak point is the engine..do you know any other type other than buhk 10 and yanmar which have been sucessfully fitted??

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

Hi Homa
what happened to the She 33.
why are you against the deeper draught vessels, we used to have had a Co 32 based on the Deben for 10 yrs with no probs 5`6" draught.
now around 6` with present boat & dont really find it a problem.
last season got into the Ore @ 2 hrs after low on neaps

Re: Which 30+ ft boat (from the 1970-80\'s) ?

Try looking at a Gib'sea Master 96. They are available in deep fin keel, bilge and lift keel versions.

They are very well appointed as standard - moody 336 owners glare in embarrassment after they come abaord because the interior is IMHO much better and they cost £25 k less than the Moodys.!!

Engines are usually volvo 2002s or 2003 but some do have yanmars.

They sail well, respond to being reefed rather than sailed on their ear - which also makes life easier for young children and guinea pigs - not to say SWIMBO as well. Coming back from Blankenberge to Walton-on-the-Naze averaged 7.5 Kts with peaks of 10.5Kts,

Sleep 6 in comfort, 8 if you know each other well and 10 if you're stuck!

Ken
