I'm looking for somewhere that is better to bring up kids than a place where there's little respect for others, where children can get a decent education and where the whole educational culture is based on them having responsibility to learn and understanding that by failing they only hurt themselves, rather than saying it's not their fault, or the system's failed them.

Where the cult of the celebrity and social pornography pervade every aspect of the media and our veiw of the world - I mean who gives a flying f**k about Pippa Middleton or Jordan - what have they done for... well, anything apart from selling newspapers? And don't get me started on Mr Cowell and his ilk...

Where I'm not surrounded by obnoxious, borderline sociopathic neighbours who think I'm stealing their soil or who threaten my family and others with a pack of dogs or a gun when they try to use the track leading up past theri house into the woods (hang about, I'm not really selling my place here...).

I used to feel like that when I lived darn sarf.

But since moving up to the Highlands, all those complaints are solved and I really like it here.

Perhaps you are just in the wrong part of Scotland?

I really like where we live now, but I have always yearned for one of the two or three houses that we can see from our mooring on the Beaulieu River. All have their own jetties and lots of privacy.

I'll never be able to afford any of them, so I console myself with the thought that I'm paying a lot less for the view than they are :)
