If it's what I think it is I know a guy who works there.

It's a training centre for commercial ship skippers.

Scale models of supertankers/etc are driven about by trainees.

Right?

Looks like some sort of water storage pond, possibly for SIA.

Yes the torpedo test lake is now used for diving (military during week, public at weekends), I did Padi open water dives there (in nov with frost on the ground, I havnt dived anywhere that isnt tropical since!), They have sunk a old heli fusealge and a car etc to also dive around . Details Here

Dare one ask how you test a torpedo in a glorified fishpond?
(apart from 'very carefully' that is) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well blow me..I was only about 100 yards from Horsea island last weekend and never knew it was there. I was at Port Solent...of course..but thats not he same place as the pond near Eastleigh Airport is it...

There was (is?) a place near Loch Lomond where they fired torpedoes in an indoor tank.....with a glass side - so one could watch and measure. They were harvested in a net at the far end. ~there was a substantial ditch between the tank and the viewing platform. I hope they won't come looking for me for disclosing this info..

I used to do some work for a guy who sold cranes to the MOD at Shoeburyness who then used them to test the handling characteristics of torpedos. They dropped live torpedos from upto 40' and if they failed the test we got an order for another crane!

The old test tank behind Faslane in Glen Fruin is no longer used and the army use the grounds for training. I used to maintain some computer kit there and was present when they did some test firings of a scale model of a new torpedo from the model of the bows of a nuclear sub. Very impressive but the glass tiles the wall was made of used to leak and the tank was filled from a burn up in the hills.

Antony, sadly no more, the credit crunch has hit the senior service so it is no longer open to civilian divers at the weekends.
