But they will be able to install yacht locks or even a cill or gate in the existing narrow Porthcawl entrance, and in any event there is likely to be a very short access window of around 2 -3 hours either side of HW so the water loss will be proportionately smaller, and any water lost will only affect small pleasure/fishing boats. The case in Barry is very different as the needs of commercial shipping dictate what can be done if yachts were to be able to share docks access.

Portishead marina is another place that has no natural feed of water. If you look near the lock gates you can see the water being pumped back in after the lock has dropped.

Yes, overpumping is common but expensive. Not sure if Portishead simply loses its water through lock usage, or if it simply leaks out as well as is the case in Barry!
