Taking a long weekend and hoping to get to the West Country. First stop Brixham
Is there anywhere worth going to eat in Brixham? My only recollections of Brixham from a visit a few years ago are the smell of fish and chips, the overflowing waste bins and the litter in the streets

It always seems a bit hit and miss for us. We've had reasonable meals in some places in the town, which have then been poor next time we've been. I'm sure that there's some good places, but we haven't found them yet. Despite that I enjoy Brixham, but I'm not sure why!

I quite like the Yacht club, and there's a handy visitor pontoon nearby (but you will need a tender) and the food is as good as anywhere.

SWMBO and I stopped over in Brixham just a few weeks ago and had a great meal at Beamers, or could be Breamers. Its located on the front by what looks like a market area on the north side of the harbour.

The actual restaurant is actually upstairs, if you're lucky you can get a great view across the bay.

Try eating the fish and chips- did a stop over recently and our cooker wasn't working. We had some fish and chips from one of the chippies on the seafront on the old harbour- the fish was lovely. I'm not normally one for food like that, but it was great, especially with a few beers.

Did you have your defibrillator ready though?

no- the fish was terminal and had been out of the water too long to make a recovery.

Posted this on the food and drink forum.
We eat on-board but try this for a drink.

The Maritime Inn
On the hill above the marina. There are steps up from the harbour.
A lovely floral display distinguishes this hostelry.

A cross between the old curiosity shop and Steptoe & Son's parlour.
Beer's not very good, I don't think they do food but what it has got is Character, all over the walls and ceiling and every nook and cranny.
Just walking through the door will make you smile!
We visited in June and as if it needed added atmosphere, the open fire was roaring away.
Watch out for the parrot, it does have a vicious streak and the tendancy to crap on you!

You may not want to say all night but this place is definatly worth a visit.

I can confirm most of the experiences below as follows.

Brixam yacht club. good basic pub-type food often supplimented by very good specials. The view over the bay is terrific and the service and friendliness is better than most. sign in as a visiting yachtsman.

Beamers. beside the Harbour and up the stairs. OK but there are better places.

Poop-Deck, beside the Harbour and up different stairs. Excellent, the meals we have there are really good.

Saxtys, almost beside the Harbour and on the ground floor. Specialising in fishy things but not exclusively. Mainly good.

Pilgrims, another up the stairs, and there are several more.

Quayside Hotel, OK. Berry Head Hotel, OK. wonderful view across the Bay.

Popping down-market a bit. Try the chinese take away up Fore street, the Balti same street. Wetherspoons in Bolton street. Good value but can be a bit 'plasticy'. Breakfast is very good value - £2.99 for the works.

My choice has always been Fish and Chips from the shop nearest the Golden Hind replica - there are two together. This is cooked while you wait and the best quality I have ever tasted anywhere. Even the mate eats them, and she wouldn't be seen dead eating fish chips anywhere! Everthing in Brixam eats fish and chips, the locals. the dogs and cats, the seagulls and seems like most of the visitors.

Not to forget Jennys crab sandwiches on the Harbour side - you can sit at a table outside and eat them along with a glass of wine from the nearest pub - the wine cost as much as the sandwhich.

Cost, there is something to suit every appetite, taste and pocket within 5 minutes walk during the season.

Smelly and full of litter - fraid so. The whole area seems to smell of cooked fish, its wonderful and I like it. The litter - bloody seagulls, they get in the rubbish bins and beak it all out on the ground, then it ends up everywhere, harbour and marina included.

I spend every week end at Brixham, its not posh, but I like it.

Hope this helps.

The Indian on the corner by the zebra crossing, used to be a greasy spoon is pretty good. For value you can walk through the high st and go Widderspoons just off the cross roads. The clubs alraight but often are fuctions on so you can't get a meal.
Look above the shops on the harbour road there a number of places, some specialising in fishfood.

Regards.

Peter.
