There’s a rumour (being put about in US pilot books) that the French only retook the rock by landing large quantities of rum and waiting for the British sailors to be so drunk they didn’t want to fight. The comment also says that you won’t find this account in any British history book.

I was just wondering whether the juxtaposition of Diamond Rock with its green thatch and Mrs Morris with her tawny thatch was intentional by Mr Morris to illustrate the point.
