Do you remember he bubble trap at the Sandcreek dam lock, can't remember the spelling and we thought we might sink when going through the bubbles? And the tidal stream that then swept you up to Goes before they blocked the Roompot partially, and how you could carry the tide up to Willemstadt?
Gosh yes. The old lock that's now part of the boatyard marina, and the old boy who tottered out of his cottage by the road bridge halfway up the canal sucking on his pipe, and dangled the clog with menaces.
And the tide used to whip past the entrance to Willemstad, and through Zijp narrows too!
It's all sanitised now.
About 15 years ago we went up to Yerseke, and before mooring up wanted to take on some diesel. The comely harbour mistress directed us to a fuel hulk in the corner of the harbour where we took on a hose about 3" in diameter out of which issued diesel under high pressure-RED diesel. I muttered something to the guy i/c hose about the illegality of supplying red to a yacht and he muttered in return something alongside the lines of "that's all we've got so that's what you get". A pragmatic bunch there.
