Where do you work on your boat?

At home, building my second boat here. Knocked up a shed to work in, so can work in the bits of spare time in the evenings. I do have lots of space, so that is not a problem, also no problems with annoying neighbours re noise.

Personally I preferred to work on my boat at the boatyard. Id go down for a few days and work from early to dusk then go home and recharge batteries for the next trip. Also good to see nice boats around you while you work on your boat. strangely ve plenty of room at home including a big barn but I think id achieve far less at home than going down the yard even with it being 200 miles away.

We are lucky, the yacht club (Benfleet) is 5 minutes drive from our house, it has great facilities at a price that cant be matched anywhere. It even has a chandlery at the boatyard next door. So great for projects. Trouble is old boats are expensive to do up.
When i was refitting our Sabre i remember walking into Barry's chandlery late one Saturday afternoon for more bolts & about the fourth visit that day.
I said to him "How about we make this easier, If i give you my bank details youmight as well just empty it once a month!"

In Perth Suburbia (on the Swan River) there is a yard especially set aside for amateur boat builders. Thirty years ago there were 100 boats being built but when I checked two years ago there was one. What the hell is wrong with young people these days? Mummy has to drop them off to school and all they can do all day is play with there iPads: no back-yard cricket, no soccer practice....

But apparently it is not just a Western problem:
Too-soft recruits hindering China's army | The Seattle Times
17 Feb 2015 — Because of China's one-child policy, People's Liberation Army officers recognize that many of its volunteers and conscripts have been spoiled by doting parents and need toughening up, according to a RAND Corp. report.
Now i will get off my soap soapbox.

Why is it a problem? Human beings are rational animals who seek satisfaction by considering their options available to them at any particular point in time. Building a boat for oneself is not rational given the alternatives available. At times in the past it may have been the best rational choice, but it is clear that those times are past.

Nothing wrong with young people today, unless you view them through old peoples' eyes conditioned by their own past, then they may seem to be odd - but they are the product of the choices available today which brings us full circle to the paragraph above.

Time to move on.

You're right, those times ended perhaps 30 years ago in most places.

You say that Human beings are rational animals who seek satisfaction

Building a boat is a way of seeking satisfaction in the same way as racing a dingy around a lake or building a model steam engine.

Its a free world and we (mostly) have freedom to choose what we will do to seek satisfaction and pleasure.

Times have changed and people have become more affluent and can afford to pay money for their satisfaction. It does not mean every one needs to pay for their pleasure.

Some people get great pleasure from creating something or beating a competitor in a race or other physical activity.

NO ONE has the right to tell another what they can and cannot do and it is in my view very discourteous for anyone to criticize anyone else for their choices.

If we all had the same view the world would be a very boring place .

I do find it difficult to believe that the young lady in our local shop need a calculator to workout what I have to pay when I buy 10 of the same items at the same price. This is a true story BTW.

Time has moved on some times for the good some times for the worse.

Home, but that's the boat. Which is currently like living in a small floating building site. Do not try this except while single, or with a very understanding other.

Where did I say there was no freedom of choice? or even worse tell other people what to do?

If the objective is to go sailing then building a boat is not necessarily a rational choice. If the main objective is to build something that may then be used for sailing then building a boat can make sense. It is not normally, however a rational economic decision.

All I was doing was trying to explain why few people seem to have the second objective and therefore few build boats these days which is what the post was lamenting.

These observations come from somebody who built 2 boats in an era when it was a rational decision because it was not possible to buy a complete boat owing to the lack of availability and choice of used boats and the high cost of new. These conditions do not exist now. There is an oversupply (generally) of used boats, a huge choice of types at all price levels, and many more people can afford to buy new.

You did not say there is no freedom of choice but you have said building a boat these days is not a rational choice. So you are implying that any one who decide to build is not rational, in your view.

I built my own boat as I could not find one that satisficed all my requirement. I also rebuild classic cars which could also be considered not rational as I have a perfectible functioning 4 x 4.

Is it rational to drive an Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce of Ferrari when a VW or Ford will get you from A to B a lot cheaper and in the same time.

It may not be rational but people do it for their own reasons and who is to question that and what's more criticize them and some even degrade them

I consider sailing a boat around a lake in a race is not rational but I don't go round saying its not rational as its Their choice.

Then there are those who don't accept a person who decides to build a boat as their choice and start criticize them with sarcastic comments like pvb who I don't agree with so I have him on ignore as he takes every opportunity to make derogative comments about me an any one who does not agree with him and does their own thing.

Why cannot we all live and let live and accept other people think differently and just wish to do their own thing without derogative comments

Or it it for some self interest or to bolster their own ego.

You didn't, but you need to be wise to Rogershaw's comments. I sometimes think he could have an argument in an empty room.

Nothing to do with that I just don't like and try to avoid loud and aggressive people. I just ignore then as they have nothing of value to me. Others can make their own mind up.

If you have me on "ignore", how come you're replying to my posts?

It's also possible to have a project boat where you use it and work on it.
Mine was a motorboat for 3 years until I sourced a suitable mast. It still got me out and about on those lovely summers days.
Can't beat having a plastic patio and chair set inside while interior construction takes place ?

Because I don’t have a house on a deep water river with its own 10t slipway and boat barn adjacent , I feel my life lacks something ?
Edit : Forgot the mast crane on the deep water jetty

PyroJames: Best answer yet ?

Meanwhile , a cycle ride takes me to work on boat..

Because I have the option to read your post if I wish to do so. Is this against you rues or don't I have the right to reply to anyone I wish.

No I will not take you off ignore as I don't really wish to read you comments

That all makes perfect sense, I suppose. ;)

Yes I agree even my boat is on my mooring I do sometimes just sit in the cockpit and enjoy the nice weather we have, its different to sitting on my balcony of my condo overlooking my boat. Some times I do tinker and like now at home I am making some extra fittings to make using my boat easer to use or safer.

There are many ways to source items for a project boat. You would have to be insane to buy screws, nuts and bolts from a chandlery when you can save a fortune buying from a supplier.
You have a mental list of all the items needed but a project could take many years so there is no rush to go out and buy everything. Many items turn up at great prices.
I recently aquired a legit demo lewmar 46 with motor drive adaptor plate for £300, rrp about £2400! (Has anyone got another? haha
) An as new dometic 3 burner stainless stove for £150.. point being crappy items can be upgraded as and when they turn up.
Fabricating all your own stainless saves another fortune.
Scrap metal merchants can be a great source of new reels of electrical wire...
Ebay and Facebook market is also a great source of bargains.
Rebuilding a boat does not have to be as expensive as many think if the builder has the relevant skillsets

While I was building my current boat I used to visit the UK in September. I would do to all the boat jumbles arums that time and also to the Southampton Boat show to get what I needed. I also go to agricultural suppliers for things like chain shackles and of cause bolt suppliers for nuts and bolts buying in bulk.

I also purchased items from the UK on E bay and got then consolidated in the US and shipped out to me in one go.
