Having now seen them, they are worth the £10 each. They're quite a bit bigger than normal webbing straps, and nicely TIG welded

This is my last week on the boat. Survey is on Wednesday and if it passes that it'll be handed over to buyer next week most likely. Feels a bit sad - I put a lot of effort into speccing and modding the boat and have only done 200hours and one season, and I really quite like it. Well, if by August your leg should be fine, there's nothing like some waterski to speed up a full recovery!

Sq58 was surveyed earlier this week and managed to pass, phew, so current plan is new owner will take the boat next Friday, June 11th, so I'll have to meet you in a pub, sorry! Or on Nick's aft deck and we can look at the space that was my boat :-(

Mapis, thanks for the offer but I'm not going near a ski (water or snow) for a while! The borken ankle/leg is my front foot when monoskiing! However, as part of the deal on selling my Sq58 I have it back for the first two weeks in August (sweet deal, huh, but it was "take it or leave it" and the buyer reluctantly agreed). So I will have a final cruise around Corsica in the Sq58 in August

Thanks for your info and I will type a letter this week and take it to the capitainerie in Antibes requesting your use of my berth for those dates. Thanks for the comments on the mods; for anyone else here is a pic i shared with Lozzer, of the modded galley Fairline are making on my 78 build, with a shortened island unit, open-style internal stairs, and extra cupboards on the aft bulkhead to make up for the shorter island. There will also be another run of kitchen units and worktop (not in this sketch) forward port side, where Fairline normally put 2 bar stools, so the galley will be quite a bit bigger than in this sketch. Feel free to make any constructive comments, cos this hasn't been built yet so it can be changed

I don't know the lay out of the boat but could you not use the space under the first three steps for an extra custom cupboards/drawers as it would seem to be wasted space where you might need it most in the galley? I guess you won't be that tight though to store the odd frying pan on a 78fter.

PS what is the ob rating of this boat/ship? Must be nearing/surpassing the forum record which Matt used to hold I think but he didn't have room on top for 'birds' and was a foot shorter I seem to remember.

Under each step, forward edge, there will be white LEDs routed flush into the wooden step, to light the step below, you'll be pleased to hear

Understand what you mean now. I think you should go the whole hog and have an escalator ;-) I don't mean a stanna I mean a proper glass n ss unit that detects which end you are at and travels in the appropriate direction. Can't be many boats on Mole Sud with one of those can there?

Ah yes I forgot. Above 50 feet extra decks increase the OB rating ("Tridecker", and so on). Very chuffed for your confirmation of the 20s. I'll work on the customisation and shoot for 30. Last week I added 2 options to the spec: a massive B+O tele with 5.1 cinema sound (which means nothing to me; I know nowt about teles but they told me it was good for watching DVDs) and RGB LED moodlighting under the saloon and lower dining seating, with Lumishore-esque control of the RGB mix. That must be worth a point or two (the LEDs cost 7 grand, ffs)

I will try to put your edge lighting somewhere. Not sure where; mebbe the upper dash

Dont forget to add sound to light control for your Lumishore's imagine the effect at anchor at night listening to some gentle classical music with the light changing in Sync, or some boomtastic beat for the late night naked ladies diving competitions ;-) I am sure the Lumishore guys can give you what you need. You could have the whole mood of the boat controlled by a single DMX mixing console as well......

I know of a DMX unit that you can control from your Iphone with a little app....

Oh yes - the dreaded internal stairs - always a compromise.

FWIW – I wonder if you have enough hand rails – remember these stairs will be used whilst under way.

Another point – I assume that the actual hatch is fixed and cant be moved but imagine being at anchor and the salad is being prepared on the worktop and some clown comes down the steps dropping “stuff” into the coleslaw.
I’m sure you don’t have much choice but cant the stairs be offset or something?
However, I’m sure you already know my views and that I you are doing the right thing by having internal stairs fitted.
Anyway, this is the fun bit – getting it all right.

Yup the details are tricky hurric. I can't move the top hatch cos of the GRP mouldings. They will fit a nice sliding door at the top, same as a Targa 40-something style door, with electric slide. On handrails they can make a s/s bannister but I've asked them not to (the sketch above is mine, not FL's) so that it looks minimalist. Plan is that by the time you're on the first step you can reach the ceiling handholds - ceiling is 2015mm here. If it doesn't work, we'll retrofit a bannister. As for salad, you're right, but there is loads of other galley worktop and it's unlikely that food prep would occur on the isalnd unit. There is another 2m run of units and worktop to the right of the picture, out of shot; it's the biggest ever galley they have put in a Sq78 cos I'm deleting the breakfast bar and 2 bar stools, and making that space into more galley. (The sketch is looking across from the stbd side of the boat to the port side, so as you walk up those stairs you are walking aftwards)

Well, of course the offer is valid also for the lake ride alone, the slalom course at 41' off is not mandatory...
I'll be around there till the end of August, so if you fancy some fresh water cruising after your Corsica cruise, just let me know!

Re. the internal stair, I wasn't aware of its arrangement in the 78. And frankly speaking, I must say that I don't like it at all.
For what can be "not liked" in a boat with an OB rating of 30, that is...! But for instance, it's much better in the 58, imho.
A nicer (again imho, obviously) alternative idea popped to my mind looking at the drawing, but since you also say that the top hatch is a constraint, it's not even worth mentioning it, because it would have required a pretty radical redesign.

If you consider the galley mainly as a crew area (which they usually are on 80 footers) then I think it works well, with easy access for delivering food and drinks to the flybridge. The same arrangement on a smaller boat, in full view of the saloon and used mostly by the owner and guests, may be less ideal, but I could live with it.

Whilst i'm sure the meeting on Nick's boat was said in jest, you are, of course, more than welcome to use the boat if you want, in port or at anchor. There's even a couple of bottles of champoo in the fridge.

Jimmy, we're arriving Friday 18th in the afternoon, but planning to head off on the Saturday, weather permitting, for a week long trip into Italy. Are you still around on the Friday?

Yup, the top hatch is just non moveable, without major re-work of GRP. On the original Sq74, early builds, they put a fore-aft "bulkhead" each side of the stairs so they were hidden, but it made the galley very closed in. I want a very open look, hence the above sketch.

AndieMac, for head bashing the steps will have bullnosed full radii. They are being modelled on the bottom 2 steps of the Sq58 internal stairs

Aesthetics wise, there is no question the boat looks better with no stairs and just a big open plan galley. But I need the stairs for practical reasons, hence I gotta compromise on the looks. And as said above I cannot move the top hatch. So the question becomes, how to do it, given those constraints?
