The port engine has an intermittent problem in that it will often not start. From helpful suggestions from an earlier post, I have tracked it down to a loose wire in the socket that the starter relay fits into.

I can generally start the engine by taking off the control box lid and waggling the socket and relay but this is getting to be a chore.

The relay is fine and I have swapped it with the stbd engine which has no problems.

The relay has a standard automotive layout, identical to those in a car, but I can't find a socket anywhere

Here is pic of the socket with the relay removed. Its top left in the control box. Not a good pic but you may just be able to make it out - a black box

And here it is face on

Anyone know where I can get one

And also, the relay for the Kad 32 costs around £70 which is a joke even by Volvo standards. Has anyone found a replacement car relay that will do the job?

You should be able to draw out the offending spade connection and repair by using a small terminal driver to free it from the plastic. I think a suitable relay may be got from Halfords.

Hi Richard

Hope you and Liz are well.

Regarding your problem, as you mention the relay is serviceable but you think it is the terminal/wiring. All I would do it remove the plastic socket as already mentioned using a small screwdriver down the side of the terminal to release the spade terminal and inspect it to see if anything obvious wrong. If needbe cut off the terminal and crimp a new one in it's place. You could refit the terminals back in the plastic socket but for the while I would leave them out so you ccould still fiddle with them if the problem still exists.

Of course if you were still at Poole I could have done the job in the time it took me to write this - ha ha

I hope you are keeping those engines clean?

I had a similar problem but in my case the holder got hot/u.s and my best efforts failed to find a replacement. In the end i dicarded the holder a connected the large and small lucar connectors straight onto the relay. Just make sure you keep a diagramn of the connection oriontation.

They can be pulled out from the rear of the socket? Or does the spade connector come out of the front?

Hi Richard

We are well thanks - No haven't cleaned the engines yet. We popped onto the boat Monday as we were down that way but then realised it was Cowes week and there would be no berths available at Cowes and in any case, the Solent would be swamped with all those earnest and determined raggies charging about everywhere

So we came home

You remove the spade terminal from the wire end. If you look into the terminal, on the flat back part of the terminal you should see a small flap of metal sticking slightly out. Slide a fine screwdriver blade down inbetween the terminal and plastic socket, then either pull from the wire side or push on the end of the terminal. This should remove it.

I hope I have explained it OK.

RS components will have them, give technical the relay details and im sure they will give you the part number over the phone!
