When I were a lad I bought a 'Green River' sheath knife in a chandlery. It was not stainless steel, was easy to sharpen to whatever kind of edge was needed and held an edge well.

Now I've lost it.

Anyone know where I can get one or seen one in a chandlery recently?

I've tried Google but that only shows stainless versions and I don't want stainless.

Be aware,I have one of these the sheath sown onto the sleeve of my oilies, forgot to take it out while wandering in Gosport and plod took a very dim view of it!
Mind you very good knives and if sharpened with coarse stone very effective at cutting rope. With a fine stone can achieve Stanley blade sharpness.
Stainless version hopeless.

Green river knife is a trade name it was sold by the hudson bay Co to the mounain men better known as fur traders such men as Jim Bridger, jedediah Smith,Joe Meek, to name a few, real men. that make the gunfighters that came later pure bunkum. and it was named after the green river where they used to somethimes old the Rendezvous. Today its made to order in the usa and is very expensive, but because of its name it was mass produced in Sheffield. make your own from a circular saw blade its the correct steel.

I heard that the knife was originaly made in Sheffield and had the initials of King George on the blade, G. R., which was mistakenly taken to mean Green River by the mountain men and so the knife was named.

Probably not true but it pleases the romantic in me.

I know from google that there is a Green River firm in the states making stainless copies of the knife I mean, as well as of various skinning knives etc. but I get the feeling that they are more for look than use.
