Where and what time of day

Somewhere in Scotland (aren't they always?)
Time: early, late or middle of the day, depending on the filter.

Well, knowing his local waters as I do (very well) it could well be dusk in the Thames Estuary, a gloomy evening, heading for home up the Swin and that blob on the horizon might be the old Grain power station.

Sorry Cantana, not my local sailing area of the East Coast. Pete7 is getting warmer and along the right lines about a long beat.

As to the time of day, I should say it was a July day so long hours of daylight. Just choose an hour.

I've only sailed those waters since 1961, so I've looked, and I've looked, and I've even looked again ........ but I still can't really put my hand on my heart and say where it is.

Do you think a visit to Specsavers might be overdue (for me?).

Well ..... my first reaction on seeing your OP was ....... (drum roll, please):

............approaching Portland from the South?

I am surprised no one mentioned the underlying large rollers, that should be the hint. To explain, this photo was taken about due south of Lands End as I was beating singlehanded to the Isles of Scilly in about a force 6 with double reefed main and genoa on my Fulmar. What made it so dramatic was it was 4 in the afternoon. The massive dark cloud had almost obscured the sun except for the reflected light under the cloud. It looked much nearer sunset, but the lack of a red tinge in the light should have been th clue.

Dammit, I got the location, the boat, the fact you had no crew AND your sail plan but was still working on the time of day
